4 Months Later
Aiden, Amelia, and I had become quite close friends over time, especially Aiden and I. I wasn't exactly sure where he lived but I knew that he must've lived close, as most times I went out to play he would often also be there. Since we we're on break for the holidays him and I often played outside in the snow. There really were no other children around for us to play with as most of the people who lived on this block are either much older or don't let their kids play on the streets. My father was mostly preoccupied with work and Aiden seemed to know exactly what that was like.
On one particular day of boredom, I was watching telly wrapped up in a blanket by the fire. Next thing I know the screen goes blank, I look over to see father with the remote.
"What was that for?" I asked, annoyed as I was very engrossed in my program.
"I have a client coming over" he said plainly, putting the remote on the mantel over the fireplace. "You can go out and do whatever it is you do, or you can stay in your room, you just cannot be here" he added.
"Does that mean uncle John is coming over?" I asked.
"Yes" he replied, walking into the kitchen and picking up a file from the kitchen table.
"So, Rosie is also coming?" I asked.
"I did not say that" he replied as he read.
"He's leaving her at home?" I asked, confused.
"She's at her aunt's house" he answered, still reading. Before I could reply, someone knocked on the door; it was John. He walked in and nodded at me.
"Hello, Cecily" he greeted with a smile.
"Hello, uncle John" I greeted back, "dad's kicking me out"
"Well I don't think you'd want to stay for this anyway, boring grown-up things and all" he responded as he walked over to father and the files. As they talked, I noticed a torch on the floor beside me. I picked it up and flicked the switch; it worked.
"Cecily, put that down" father said, not even taking his eye off the page. I turned it off and stuck my tongue out in response. I walked up to them, turning it on it again.
"I wanna see the bloodied bodies" I said in a raspy voice, having the torch light shine from below my chin. Father grabbed it from my hands, turned it off, and placed it next to the telly remote on the mantle.
"Find something to do that isn't here" he said, finally looking at me. I groaned and started walking toward the door to the stairwell.
"She's only been here half a year and she's already screwed up" John half-joked, shaking his head.
I walked outside the door and closed it before descending down the stairs. Usually, I would smell food being cooked and hear the kettle whistling, but Mrs. Hudson seemed to be out. As I put on my wellies and jacket I looked outside to see if Aiden was outside, but didn't have any luck. I put my hat on before heading outside and sitting on the small incline outside the door; people probably thought I was homeless, but there was absolutely nothing to do inside.
Not even two minutes had passed and Aiden came walking up from the same alley way he'd always come walking out of. Was I psychic? Was he?
"Aiden!" I exclaimed, waving. He smiled and waved back, picking up his pace.
"My mum said I can't be out too long, I have to help decorate for the holidays later" he explained.
"That's okay" I shrugged, "What do you want to do?" I asked. "We can't go in my house, my dad has a meeting" I added.
Aiden had been in my house a couple times for tea, but he had never invited me over to his. I never really asked, but I was always curious as to what his house looked like. I decided today would be the day I'd ask him about it.
"He has a lot of those, huh?" he asked.
"Yeah, kinda" I said, "what about your house?" I asked, "what if we played there?"
"Oh, I don't know" he trailed off, looking down. "I don't know how my mum and dad would feel about having people over." he said, he then looked up like a lightbulb went off "well they aren't home right now"he added.
"Is it a good idea to go if they aren't home?" I asked, having not been to a friends house before.
"What's the harm in a little tour?" he asked, starting to walk in the direction he came from. "Cmon," he said, turning to wave at me to follow him; I did just that.
"Where do you live?" I asked, trying to get a picture of it in my head. "Is it a flat or a house?" I asked.
"You'll see, and neither" he answered, walking with his hands in his pockets, acting all cool-like. We approach the alley, I look around to see that it's a dead end.
Is he homeless?
"You live here?" I asked, looking around. There were no signs of anyone living there, so I felt like he was taking the piss.
"Yeah, right there" he said, pointing to a blue police box.
"Yeah, really funny" I groaned, before starting to walk away.
"Wait" he said, grabbing my arm. "I'm not trying to be funny" he added, dragging me into the alley way. I started to get nervous, broken glass and used needles aren't exactly welcoming.
He stopped in front of it.
"This joke is going a bit too far, Aiden" I whined, "can we just get out of here."
"Just be patient" he assured, digging into his pockets and taking out a key. He then put the key into the door and opened it; I stood watching very perplexed. He opened the door and hurried me inside and closed the door behind us.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
