Today is the weekend, so you had enough time you want to work on your project, albeit your mother attacking you with reprimanding remarks about your hobbies. For the rest of the day, you refuse to speak to her after that argument last night, sometimes coming down to get something to eat. Whenever she'd comment on your projects, you'd ignored her. Whenever she'd say something that felt degrading to your lifestyle, you'd escape to your room with your food.
You knew that she'd get mad, but you didn't care. All you wanted was some time alone.
After your projects were finished, you safely and gently placed them in your portfolio bag, making sure they are secure. You didn't want to risk your mother snooping around.
Your phone rang, and you picked it up. You smiled to see your aunt's name on the caller ID. Your father's sister never missed the chance to visit you whenever she can, and it made your heart fly a bit. She is like your father; creative, independent, adventurous. You saw her as a mother figure, and she saw you as a daughter.
"Hello?" You answered with a hopeful greeting.
"Hey, (N/N)! How are you doing, sweetheart?" Your aunt cheerfully asked.
"I'm doing okay, apart from mom not understanding."
"Oh, yeah. I feel you, sweetie. But hey! I've got some news for ya! Remember your birthday happening tomorrow?"
"Yeah? What about it?"
"Well, your father wanted to give you something before he passed. I managed to save it for you for a while now."
"What? Really?" You asked excitedly.
"It's really special. I've sent it to your house. Should be here soon."
"Oh, my God! Aunt (A/N), thank you!"
"Of course, dear," your aunt giggled on the other end. "You're gonna love it. It'll help remind you of your father."
You could have sworn tears were about to leave your eyes. "Thank you so much. I love you."
"I love you, too, sweetheart. Bye," your aunt replied.
As soon as you hung up, you laughed in elation and sat on the bed. Your father had saved something for you for your birthday, and it's on its way here. You couldn't believe it. You'd have another thing to remember your dad.
Sure enough, the package arrived in the mail. With excitement running across you, you quickly picked up the package and rushed up to your room. Your mother was gone for the day, so it's just you alone, which is a good thing.
You were growing more excited as you started opening the package. You finally opened it and excitement changed to wonder and astonishment as you picked up a peculiar item. It's almost like a Gameboy, except it has a few added buttons and attachments. You turned it to the back and noticed a power port.
"Wow. Dad, what were you working on?" You mumbled to yourself.
Your (E/C) eyes then landed on a note. You picked it up and began reading it.
"Dear (Y/N),
If you're reading this, I'm already in a better place. But I want you to know that I'm okay. I've created this device so that you can see and go to other places that I can't. Where there are wonders waiting to be discovered, adventures to have, destinations to explore. No matter what happens, I'll always be proud of you. I love you, baby girl. And Happy Birthday.
Love, Dad"
You were tearing up by the time you got to the end of the note. You then noticed instructions in the back of the note. Flipping it over, you read what needs to be done to get the device working. First, it needed a USB port, so that's what you needed.
