CHAPTER NINE:

When opportunity knocks at the door

'What is wrong with you?!' Warren yelled as he stood.

'No! What is wrong with you?!' Merry shouted back as she stood from the table as well.

Ms. Levinson came back from the garden and she was surprised at the sparking war between the two.

'What is going on?!' Ms. Levinson asked in shock at what she witnessed at the dining table.

'This man just ruined my life!' Merry said firmly.

Warren scoffed, raising his hands. 'Woah, Woah. Wait a second. How did I ruin your life by just letting you sleep in my house for free?' He looked confused.

'Just– Urgh! How stupid can you be?!' Merry spatted.

'Uhm– I think it's time for you to leave Merry.' Ms. Levinson said as she grabbed Merry towards the door.

'Yeah, that's probably the best option here. You leave, witch!' Warren screamed.

Merry looked back wanting to scream back too. However, Ms. Levinson told her not to do so. All she could do is to give him a deadly glare, while Warren stuck out his tongue at her.

'Just don't listen to him. Don't look at him.' Ms. Levinson said as they walk towards the pathway.

They stopped at the gate. The old lady puffed some air before she spoke.

'Merry I– I apologize about that. He was always had been that way ever since his wedding was called off.' Ms. Levinson said, looking apologetic.

Merry was not surprised about it for it was all over the headlines. But she thought his temper was getting out of hand.

'But–,' Ms. Levinson paused in hesitation. 'Uhm. I know we just met but can I ask you a favor?'

'Yes. Anything for you, Ms. Levinson.' Merry replied.

'I will retire from being the housemaid of the Weltons, but we can't just hire anyone. You already know how wealthy are the Weltons. So, they were looking for someone to be trustworthy as a replacement. I could guarantee that the salary is highly compensating than just working part-time jobs. You can send your sister to a good school and pay your mother's medication with ease.' Ms. Levinson explains, trying to convince the astonished young lady.

'Uhm– Woah. That's a great offer but–,' Merry paused, speechless. So, she just laughed instead. She inhaled before she spoke. 'Ms. Levinson, are you sure about this? Mr. Welton hates me, can't you see? I could imagine his angry face already the moment he will find out I'm his new maid. Well, that is if I take the job.' Merry said.

'We aren't sure about that yet. But if you will take the job, feel free to contact me.' She said as she pulled out a piece of paper from her apron and gave it to Merry. 'I didn't choose you myself, Merry.'

'What does that mean?' Merry asked, looking perplexed.

'You'll know it when you take the job.' Ms. Levinson winked, then smiled before she entered the mansion.

Merry turned around and tilted her head a bit in confusion. What does she mean? She asked herself over and over.

Weaver's Residence

Because she can't afford the transportation fee, Merry spent hours walking as the sun rose. She knew it would be a long and hard walk for it was not like Camely, where she could enjoy long walks as much as she likes. She took a deep breath as she reached the doorstep of their house. She opened the door and found her mother peeking from the kitchen.
