❝ BREAKING POINT

➽───────────────❥

"let's send mateo to my abuelita's place first," danna said from the back seat. "what about you?" mateo asked his sister.

she ran her fingers through his hair. "i'll be fine. you can always call me," she said to him.

not too long later, christopher pulled up in danna's grandmother's driveway. a lady came out of the garden, confusion written all over her face.

danna came out of the car, mateo following after. by the way the girl was looking, her grandmother knew something was wrong.

"que pasa? what was it this time?" her grandmother, rita, asked with concern as danna and mateo approached.

danna told her everything, completely numb. her grandmother cupped her face, not knowing what to say.

"if papi was here this wouldn't have happened," mateo said. "well he isn't here papito, we have to take care of ourselves," danna said to him.

"you'll stay with abuelita okay? behave, listen to her," she said to him. "and you? where are you going?" her grandmother asked her.

danna turned to her friends, as paula nodded at her. "i'll stay with one of them, i'll be fine," she told her grandmother.

"i should go now," danna said, going to hug her grandmother. "take care of yourself, mijita. i'll always be praying for you," rita told her and she nodded.

"gracias, abuelita. i'll see you both soon," she said to her grandmother and brother before leaving.

paula helped danna settle into the guest room in her house. the macher's were always so welcoming, so they were more than okay with having danna stay with them.

"hey danna?" paula called out as she sat on the edge of the bed while danna changed.

danna hummed in response.

"don't get me wrong, i love to have you here but i was just wondering," paula started off. "why can't you stay with your abuelita?" the girl asked.

danna pulled the hoodie over her and looked at herself in the mirror.

"i just couldn't, not after what happened last time," she shrugged, walking towards the bed.

"the last time i was there, a lot of things happened. it's like whenever anything bad happens it was always because of me," she said.

"my parents decided to get a divorce because of me. mami was giving up on me because of difficult i was. apparently i bring her bad luck," danna chuckled sadly.

"but papi, oh papi, he never gave up on me. he was always there for me, no matter what. and when tío rafael came home to abuelita's place one day, telling all of us that papi was gone-" she choked on her words, looking up at the ceiling to stop the tears from falling.

"it broke me to pieces. mami blamed me. she said if i didn't come back home so suddenly, papi wouldn't have rushed home and got into that accident," she said, her voice cracking.

"i came home because i wanted to celebrate my 14th birthday with them, with my family. but instead i lost my dad," she said, looking down as she kept her eyes shut.

danna swallowed the lump in her throat. it was hard, opening up about her past for the first time. no one knew what happened, not a single one of her friends. all they knew was that her father passed away in a car crash, and her mother ditched.

paula didn't know what to say. she was rather surprised to see her cold and baddie of a best friend shatter right in front of her.

paula stood up and sat next to her friend, pulling the girl straight into her arms as danna cried for the first time in a while.

keeping things bottled up is never good, because it'll just lead to you breaking at some point.

this was danna's point.
