CHAPTER THREE: SINCE THIRTEEN YEARS
Barty Crouch had also decided to drop in and have a talk with them but Harry barely noticed his presence as his mind had drifted to Voldemort and the 'dream' he had. Harry's tea had nearly gotten cold but he didn't seem to realise that. He hardly had his attention elevated when they were talking about something happening in Hogwarts this year and that (according to Percy) it was 'classified information'.
By dusk it appeared that the Ministry workers had lost hope of limiting magic in the area as salespersons kept apparating here and there with Quidditch merchandise. Harry finally decided that he would give all of this a thought later and perhaps tell it to Ron and Hermione once they were back at the Burrow. He purchased three omniculars while Ron had bought an action figure of Viktor Krum and a shamrock hat.
Soon, Harry found himself seated at the Minister's Box with the Weasleys and Hermione. The Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge had greeted Harry like an old friend (much to Percy's jealousy) and introduced him to the Bulgarian Minister, but to Harry's utter disgust Fudge had also invited the Malfoys who had, made a generous contribution to St. Mungo's.
Fudge's pockets more like, Harry thought bitterly. Corruption was something which, as it seemed, was common both in the Wizarding World and the muggle world, and Fudge was no exception.
Pushing the thoughts about Fudge (and a house-elf named Winky, on whom Hermione had taken an interest to), and the thoughts of different people around him which kept buzzing inside his mind aside, Harry decided to enjoy the Quidditch match. Bagman announced for the Bulgarian National Team's mascots to arrive who turned out to be Veelas. Veelas looked like women—perhaps the most beautiful women Harry had ever laid his eyes on—and they started dancing. Harry couldn't understand what was happening but it appeared as if the entire male population in not only the Minister's Box, but also the rest of the stadium had their eyes fixed on the Veelas and their mouths hanging open, and to Harry's utter bafflement he felt as if the mind of every male had gone totally blank like they were being possessed, and the women shifted uneasily on their seats in irritation towards the Veelas. But it didn't seem to affect Harry at all for some reason. Suddenly, he saw that Ron stood up from his seat and was moving ahead as if he was about to jump out of the Box, but Hermione caught him by his arm, 'Ron, what are you doing?' Hermione whispered harshly.
Ron seemed to have broken out of his trance as the music stopped. It seemed that Ron wasn't the only one who had stood up as Draco Malfoy was also one of the others who had nearly come to the edge of the Box. Yells broke out among the crowd as the Veelas seemed to have gone.
'What were those?' Harry asked shutting the buzzing of thoughts of other people inside his head which had multiplied nearly ten times. 'Why did it affect everyone like that?'
'They are Veelas, Harry', she said. 'They are a certain—well, magical species—who are females—as a male born out of a Veela is a normal wizard—so Veelas have magic like we do, but also something called an allure—to attract members of the opposite sex, er, usually males.'
'Like possess them?' Harry asked. Because it certainly appeared so, as he had felt everyone's mind go blank and it also affected women but to a lesser extent.
'No, no, not like that!' Hermione said quickly as Bagman declared for the Irish National Teams' mascot to come which turned out to be Leprechauns. 'They can't make people do whatever they want, just the—' she turned a bit pink '—well perhaps they can seduce people with that—'
