Alex glanced at his reflection in the tall mirror in his room. A pair of deep green eyes stared right back. His hair was styled the usual way. His fingers were busy fixing the already perfect bow-tie around his collar.
The sky was clear today, not a single cloud in sight. It looked like a nice day. Well, until he reached the dining hall that is.
It would be nice if he could go for a walk. Alex didn't get much opportunities to go outside. The reason behind this was the prestigious Tybur surname. The identity of the Tyburs was a very highly kept secret, and his uncle never failed to make extra efforts to keep it that way. No one except the highest governors in the government knew of their identity. This was ensured for the family's safety at all times.
It wasn't like Alex could never go outside. He could. He just had to make sure his identity as a Tybur remained hidden at all times, and he had a couple of personal guards with him.
The corridors of the mansion were silent as he passed them. The guards stood so still he would have thought they were just statues if he didn't know any better.
One would think a child like him, born in a noble family with everything one could possibly dream of, would know nothing about the other Eldians living in this nation and what they go through. And why should he? With the kind of life he was living it was almost as if he wasn't one of Ymir's subjects.
That couldn't be further from the truth.
He knew everything.
Everything.
He knew how the Eldians living in places like the internment zone of Liberio were treated like rodents. Their lives were just worthless that could be sacrificed on the battlefields in place of Marleyans. They were held guilty of crimes their ancestors committed thousands of years ago. They were brainwashed from their childhood. It was engraved in their minds that they had to atone for the sins their ancestors committed thousands of years ago. Their ancestors' action justified their outcast status in Marleyan society. Almost all of them seemed to hate the fact that Eldian blood flowed through their veins. Who wouldn't? Being treated like shit just because of their race. It wasn't like being born with Eldian blood was ever under their control. A single mistake could land them in 'Heaven', where they'll be converted into titans, forced to wander the lands for eternity.
All this was justified just because they were Eldians?
On one hand Alex thought this was bullshit. He believed that if Eldia had not lost the war 100 years ago, none of the Eldians would hate their origins. Instead the Marleyans would be in Eldians' shoes. They claim to have been treated worse than slaves but what they don't realize is, what they are doing to the Eldians today, is not so different from what their ancestors went through in the past. Maybe it wasn't the fault of Eldians, their king was just a foolish old bastard.
But on the other hand he couldn't help but hate his blood too. His family disliked the fact they were Eldians and Alex had surely somehow taken after them in that. History can't be changed. What was supposed to have had happened has already happened, and no one can do anything about it. The Eldians are hated by the world and that's just how it is and will be. He honestly didn't have to worry about his blood status. He was a Tybur. They were perhaps the only Eldian family that was so highly respected not only in Marley but the whole world. He didn't have to wear an armband like the other Eldians when he wanted to go outside. Nor was he supposed to live his life in fear.
But he knew deep down that he was an Eldian. If his great ancestors hadn't sided with Marley in the war, if Karl Fritz hadn't decided to have pity on Marley and let it win, his life would be nothing like it is today.
