chapter five : goodbyes

RAENA'S JOB HAD BEEN SIMPLE; a piece of cake in comparison to the other things she'd been tasked with throughout the years. And yet, as easy as it was, she'd still managed to make a botch of things. All she had to do was stay awake-stay on watch to protect the siblings from the potential danger in the forest, but the distraction that came in the form of an annoying young king sleeping beside her caused her to lose focus and let her mind relax for once. It was an...unusual circumstance. Normally, falling asleep had never a problem for her. Once, she'd even managed to go five days straight without sleep, only stopping to take a nap when she started hallucinating visions of her victims and Miraz. But last night, she hadn't even been that tired and yet, here she was.

At least everyone was safe and accounted for.

When she sat up, tiredly rubbing her eyes, she noticed with a bit of embarrassment that she'd been sleeping on Edmund's shoulder throughout the night. Her cheeks flushed red and she coughed awkwardly, scooting away from him as she searched for her weapons. A moment of weakness was all it was. He'd gotten her off her guard speaking of silly things like favorite colors and magical torches. She was certain that she wouldn't let it happen again.

As she stood to recollect her weapons, she realized with a quick skip of her heartbeat that Lucy and Peter were in fact, not sleeping amongst the rest of the party. Panic flooded her body as she collected her weapons a lot faster than before.

"Lucy?! Peter?!" she called frantically.

"Raena! Raena, we need help!"

Lucy came darting out from the forest, panting as she fell to Susan's side to wake her up.

"Lucy, what's wrong?" Raena asked, worriedly. If the kings and queens were in trouble, it would be her fault and then there would be more blood staining her already drenched hands.

"It's Peter, you have to come quickly!"

Susan was already up and collecting her bow and Trumpkin had pulled his small sword out in case of danger, but Edmund was still asleep, snoring away, despite Lucy's yelling. Unlike Raena, who would awake at the sound of a bird's morning chirping, it seemed as though Edmund could sleep through a war happening five feet away. With an irritated huff, she punched him in the arm and his eyes fluttered open tiredly.

"What the bloody hell was that for?" he complained with a yawn, rubbing his sore arm.

"Your brother is in trouble," Raena said, gripping her sword tightly in her hand.
