chapter seven : a lost battle

RAENA WRAPPED HER ARMS around Glenstorm's waist while he swiftly galloped through the woods towards Miraz's castle. They had to have been marching along for at least...half an hour? Three-quarters, by now? She wasn't sure, but they still had a good long ways to go before they arrived. Raena knew that Miraz couldn't have known what the Narnians were planning-he underestimated them more than he should've. But if he had sent hidden spies into the forest to track them, the whole plan would fail and most of the Narnians would be slain before they even reached the gates.

As the woods got more familiar and Miraz's looming castle emerged from the darkness of the night, Raena felt even more sick to her stomach. She'd experienced through countless horrors in her life, none of which phased her, but the thought of returning to the place where she'd been tortured and turned into a killing machine as a child, terrified her. If they caught her, she'd surely face a punishment worse than death for betraying Miraz and escaping the castle. Miraz knew she was alive now and he would surely be on the lookout for her tonight if their plan failed.

When they reached the edge of the forest, Raena tapped Glenstorm so he would stop. "We stop here and wait for Edmund's signal to move on."

Raena climbed down from Glenstorm's back and watched the griffins fly over the skies above them around the dark castle. Shortly after, one dropped Edmund off atop a tower. His light flickered with the code, signiling them to move closer from the edge of the wood. Glenstorm looked to Raena to confirm and she nodded, holding her sword above her head. Glenstorm did the same, and the Narnians began their trek to the gates.

"Is everything alright, Miss Raena?" Glenstorm asked, noticing her quietness.

"I'm fine," she replied. "Just a little worried. I've never been in a battle quite like this before. I feel as though something bad is going to happen."

"If the kings and queens trust you, so do I," Glenstorm said. "Do not be nervous. King Peter knows what he's doing."

"That's what I keep hearing," Raena mumbled. "I hope to Aslan that he does."

As the bell tolled loudly over the castle, Edmund's light flickered on once again, but it was no signal that he'd shown her. She held a hand out to stop the Narnians, tilting her head as she squinted to see what Edmund was trying to signal.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Nikabrik asked, his brow scrunching in confusion as he looked up at Raena.

"I'm not sure..." she said. "Do you think he's in trouble?"

"I'm sure he's alright, m'lady," Glenstorm assured.

The light flashed once more before going out completely. Raena's heartbeat picked up in her chest as the gates began to open. Edmund's strange flashes were worrying her, but she couldn't think about that now. She readied her sword, nodding to the other Narnians, who followed right behind her.
