chapter three : naturally hostile

THOUGH SHE HAD TRIED TO CONVINCE HIM, Peter was far too prideful to let Raena navigate, despite the fact that she knew the woods like the back of her hand and Peter hadn't even been in Narnia for hundreds of years. But instead of arguing with him any further, she just stayed quiet and allowed Peter lead the way. She didn't care enough to correct him; she was only along for the adventure and the reward at the end of the journey.
As they walked along the cliffside, Raena's eyes caught on a shimmering figure across the wood, gone quicker than a flash of lightning. She stopped suddenly, scanning the woods across the chasm for the figure she'd seen, but there was no trace of it. She put a hand over her face to shield her eyes from the sun, and looked again, but when she didn't see anything, she blamed it on simply being a trick of the light.
That was until the lion appeared.
He was the largest lion she had ever seen, magnificent and ethereal, the sun shining down on his golden fur. She was entranced by his presence, the crossbow slipping from her hand to the ground. She didn't notice its falling, but Edmund did.
"Raena?"
She took a step towards the chasm to get a closer look, but her boot slipped on the rock, causing her to let out a scream as she quickly snapped back to reality. Instead of meeting the rocky bottom of the ravine and cracking her skull open, a pair of slim arms wrapped around her waist, tugging her backwards. She fell back into Edmund's chest, gasping for breath as her eyes searched wildly for the lion she'd seen, but it was long gone; that is, if the lion had even existed in the first place. Her heart was pounding against her ribs so fast it nearly hurt her chest.
"What the hell were you doing?" Edmund asked, bewildered.
Once she realized that she was in Edmund's arms, she shoved him away from her, brushing herself off. She shot once last glance across the ravine to look for the lion that was still nowhere to be found and retrieved her crossbow, slinging it across her shoulder. She felt silly thinking she had ever seen anything at all, especially the mythical lion.
"Do not touch me," she said.
"I don't know if you noticed but I've just saved your bloody life," Edmund said, storming after her.
"I didn't ask you to," she replied. "Contrary to popular belief, not everyone needs your help just because you were a king."
"Fine. Sorry for saving you from an untimely and horrible death at the bottom of a ravine," Edmund scowled. "Next time, I'll let you fall."
