Just Another Day
“Hey... Hey Daniel...”
Someone’s calling my name. God, I’m so sleepy. As I stir myself awake I see Elicia’s smiling face, and I can’t help but smile back. “You sure look tired,” she says.
“I certainly am. Where am I?”
“You passed out in the backyard. I didn’t want to wake you up in case you got angry.”
“That’s sweet of you, Fireheart.”
“I know,” she chuckles.
She helps my sorry ass up and leads me to the house. As I open the back door I smell so many good things in the air. The aroma of tortillas, bread, eggs, and pancakes fill my nose. I walk into the kitchen and see two plates on the counter, still steaming. She cooked us breakfast, and it looks wonderful. “Wow. You didn’t have to do this, you know,” I tell her.
“So you don’t want to eat?”
“No, I do. I just wasn’t expecting this.”
“You’re welcome, by the way.”
“Thanks Elicia.”
I take both plates and set them on the table. Everything looks so good. I take a bite out of the pancakes and immediately want to take another. It’s so delicious. I guess Fireheart notices my satisfaction ‘cuz she starts smiling. Who would’ve known that this little minx was such a good cook? I devour everything and hunger for more, but I decide to be, I don’t know, gentlemanly and thank her for the food again. “So, what do you want to do today kid?” I ask.
“I dunno. Actually... how about we act like normal kids for today. Killing people’s kinda hard to get over.”
What? Act like I’m... normal? But that’s boring. Seeing people talk about their goddamn social lives, jobs, and other stupid shit like that disgusts me. I prefer to have philosophical conversations with people. Then again, the only person I’ve ever had an actual philosophical conversation with is Elicia, and even then we didn’t really talk much. She did make me breakfast, so I guess I’ll try out this normal thing for today. “Okay then,” I say. “Wanna go anywhere?”
“I rarely ever visit the mall. It’d be nice to go there. Plus, I want some clothes of my own.”
When we’re done with breakfast I grab my wallet and head out with Fireheart by my side. I’ve never really enjoyed being at the mall. Just a bunch of people running into each other trying to buy as much crap as possible before they’ve accumulated too much debt. Then again, I’m trying somethin’ new today, so might as well try to enjoy myself. At least the walk there is nice. The sky’s a bit dark and cloudy, which I always thought kinda fit my mood. It makes everything slower, more peaceful. I can actually think about things. I guess time passes faster than I thought ‘cuz we arrive at the mall sooner than anticipated. It’s barely 9:30 and people are already streaming from the stores, bags in hand and empty wallets in their pockets. “Which store are you going to?” I ask Elicia.
“Probably Target. I’m not gonna look too long.”
“Alright. I’ll be in the magazine section. Get me when you’re done.”
We separate and head to our respective destinations. I always go to the magazine section. There’s never a lot of stuff there, but I do tend to look at video game magazines the most. It’s fun for me, looking through previews of cool games like Titanfall or The Division. Too bad there’s nothing for me today. Just a bunch of bullshit tabloid magazines poking fun of celebrities that no one really cares about. I wonder if there’s any Cheetos here. I start to go to the snack section when I see Fireheart walking to me with clothes in her arms. All she has are a few pairs of skinny jeans, a couple of shirts, and some unmentionables. I have too much respect to actually say what they are, even if this is all in my head. “Is that all you’re gonna get? I have plenty of money for anything else you want.”
