The New Girl

Harry Potter stated idly at the essay in front of him. He was supposed to be working on it, but he was tired of working! It was a Friday and they'd be let out soon anyway. It didn't really matter if he finished the essay in class or not, he could always do it later.

The intercom crackled and a rough voice spoke through it. "New kid's here, someone come escort her to class. She's at the office." Severus Snape, their teacher of Chemistry, sighed. The children he was already teaching were a headache, he was not emotionally ready to take in another one.

Snape hated children. He loved chemistry, though, and was the only one in their small town who could teach the subject. He wasn't really qualifed for anything else, so Snape had taken the job. So he suffered through the seven classes of brats daily. He needed income somehow, after all.

Harry, not even bothering to raise his hand, was the first of his peers to speak. "Can I go?" Harry figured that no matter this new girl was, it would be more exciting than staring at his incomplete essay. He wondered why the office didn't just send some staff member down with her, though it was probably because of being understaffed.

Snape resisted the urgue to groan in exasperation. Looking around the room, he noticed that the Potter boy was the only one volunteering to escort the newest student here. "You may. Be quick, Potter." Snape addressed every student by Mrs, Mr, or, in some cases, Mx. LastName. With Harry, though, Severus always neglected to add that title of respect. Though Harry was not overly disruptive, he was far from it, in fact, Snape could not get over the sense of boredem the child would wear in any given circumstance. It infuriated him to no end how the boy seemed to
think himself better than having intrests. It was a petty reason to hate the boy, Snape knew, but he was a hateful name. Pettiness was not uncommon for him.

Harry flashed a grin, quicky getting up from his chair and exiting the chemistry lab. He hoped the new girl would be exciting! Harry never really found anything or anyone in his little town interesting. Everything seemed so ordinary and plain. Including Harry himself. Harry hoped that whoever was waiting at the office would be a change in scenery.

He quickly arrived at the office door, yanking it open and slipping inside. The office room was small; it only had the secretary's desk, chair, and two filing cabinets, as well as two chairs on the opposite wall, intended for visitors. The secretary, Mrs. Trelawney, waved at him (she normally would've given a verbal response, but she was on the phone, probably getting yelled at by some boring adult with nothing better to do.) She gestured to the guest chairs, where the new girl sat.

She was beautiful.

She had her eyes closed and her hands clasped together loosely in her lap. She was humming something and her body swayed slightly with the rhythm. She had wild and unkept blonde hair that stretched to her mid-back. There were radishes hanging from her ears like ear rings. She wore a long, loose and flowy pastel purple dress that hung around her knees. She had huge, sloppy grin on her face that seemed to light up the room. She looked about twelve or so, which made Harry wonder if she had advanced classes, as everyone in his class was thirteen or fourteen.

Luna's eyes suddenly snapped open, which startled Harry. "Hello, Harry." Her voice and dreamy and soft, mellow and gentle. It seemed like the type of time that would not waiver whether she was upset or excited.

Harry blinked in surprise. How did she know his name? He wondered if the secretary had told her, but Trelawney hadn't known Harry had been coming down here, so there'd be no reason for her to say such. Shaking himself out of his train of thought, he smiled at the girl. "That's me! Who are you?"

"Luna, Luna Lovegood. Though the Nargiles from my last school called me Looney Lovegood. Either name is fine."

Harry looked rather confused. "Nargiles...?" Luna gave no answer. She jumped up from her seat and skipped to the door where Harry stood. What an odd girl, Harry thought. Though she did have a calming aura around her, he must admit. Her lazy grin seemed contagious and Harry found himself sporting a matching smile to Luna.

Harry, with one last wave to Mrs. Trelawney, Harry led Luna down the hallway, back to Mr. Snape's classroom. Luna skipped beside him. "So," he tried to make conversation, "Why'd you come to school so late? Classes are nearly over."

"I was supposed to come this morning," she gazed at the art on the wall, her eyes barely seeming to take it in, as they appeared glazed, "I got distracted. Better late than never, though."

"Distracted?"

"Wrackaspurts," was all she said before they reached the classroom. Harry opened the door for her, Luna bounced right in. Harry sat back down at his seat. "Hello," she greeted. The class, who's silence was disrupted by the strange girl, snapped their eyes up at her. "My name is Luna. I'm your new classmate." She turned to Severus, who was looking like he had a strong headache coming on, and titled her head toward the desks, all of which were full. "Where am I to sit, Mr. Snape?"

Snape gritted his teeth. He did not want to deal with such matters at the end of a school day! School didn't let out for another ten minutes, and Snape knew he couldn't avoid any extra work until then. He sighed to himself. He was so very tired of children. "Pull up a chair to Potter's desk, Miss. Lovegood. I'll figure something more official out tomorrow."

Luna nodded dazily, grabbing a chair from the stack in the back of the room (skipping all the way there) and placed it beside Harry's chair. Harry's desk was long, with a sink at one end and table space at the other. There weren't many students in this class, so everyone got their own individual workspace. One perk of a small school, he supposed.

Harry flashed her a smile and Luna grinned back with that same dazed look that seemed plastered on her face since she arrived. Well, Harry thought, there's one thing that's certian.

Luna was anything but boring.
