The Lighting Bolt

The morning of the following Monday was boring. I would say exceptionally so, but that would imply it being out of the ordinary; and it was just as un-unique as every other day. But, oh, how it would change in third period; Harry's first class with Luna.

He had four out of seven of his classes with the strange girl and every period without her seemed to stretch on forever. He had a few acquaintances, such as Ron and Neville, but both were dull; though Harry would never say it to their face. They would likely both grow up in Sharlkling (the name of their nowhere town), and get the jobs their fathers have. They will marry someone, likely someone in their very class, and will have children or adopt from the local orphanage. Rinse and repeat. It's not like it's a bad way to live- not at all, actually. They would grow up happy, live fufilled, and enjoy their small lives. They would experince love, and that may be enough for them. They would experince fulfillment in whatever job they chose. They would live happy lives, for the most part. It would not bother them, or even cross their mind, that they were boring. Boring was okay; boring was a stairwell to happy.

Not for Harry, though.

He always felt out of place. Like he was meant to be somewhere bigger, better, unique. (Mayhaps even magical, Harry had thought years ago, even before he met the dazed girl with a glowing stick.) Harry, too, was boring. He knew this, and unlike everyone else he had ever met, was not content with it. He wanted.. well, it was hard to put a finger on what he wanted. Whatever he filled in the blank with seemed wrong, off. He didn't know what he wanted with his life, but whatever it was, it wasn't this. He didn't know what he wanted. Until he met her.

Whenever he saw Luna Lovegood and her magical stick? Oh, how everything changed. Except, it didn't change, did it? Nothing differed whenever she did her little spell of light. Harry's routine continued on as if it had no been interrupted, the sun continued to rise, classes still passed. Everything remained remarkably unchanged in everything and everyone but Harry. Harry felt as though he'd been flipped on his head. He felt his entire worldview shift. And, with Luna's simple spell, Harry knew what he wanted with his life.

He wanted to be a wizard.

Third period, biology, was one of the only classes with Luna where he wasn't seated right next to her, as he would find out later that day. The underfunded school did not have enough money for extra desks, so she pulled up a chair next to Harry. The teachers let her; as there was no better option, and Luna hadn't befriended many others yet.

Biology was taught by a old man with Napoleon syndrome. Short and angery to make up for it. He didn't allow any talking- like, at all. He'd assign up to 10 detentions a day, for even the smallest reasons. Dropping your pencil, mispronouncing his name (Mr. Schmidt, which was of German origin), and sneezing.

Yes, even sneezing.

Harry and Luna were unable to talk during his class, but passing notes was always an option. He started the conversation, sliding the folded notebook paper subtlety to Ron. Ron sat two desk away, which was closer to Luna than he was. Ron took the piece of paper and moved to open it, but Harry shook his head vigorously and gestured to the blonde girl who sat beside Ron.
Ron raised an eyebrow. Harry shrugged. He sighed and gave the note to Luna.

How can you do that?

That was what he asked. Harry vaguely thought about whether or not she'd even be able to read it- his handwriting was messy as all hell- but this worry proves to be futile as she skimmed over the note and quickly scribbled down a response. She gave it to Ron, who looked like he did not want to be the middleman of their note passing shananagains, but reluctantly did so anyway.

He unfolded the note, first noting Luna's handwriting. It was dainty; small and pleasing to the eye. He duly noted that she wrote her a's like the popular girls who wrote color coded notes. The note read:
