Germany's pov.
The air was cold. So cold it felt like my cheeks would frost over. France had figured out that Poland was missing, that's why we are out here. Looking. Nearly every country is out here with a flashlight or lantern, Canada made squads to cover more area quicker. Every breath is hard and cold. It feels like my lungs are going to give out. What if he is alive? What if he tells them about Reich and I? What if-
"Germany, are you going to stare at that tree for the whole night or are you going to help look?" Russia called from a few metres over. He is in my squad right? I shuffle through the snow over to him, the snow squelches under my steps."Sorry Rus... I- I'm just shaken is all..." I mutter out. Come on Germany, keep it together or they'll figure out it was your fault. I didn't want him to die, honest. Who is going to believe that? Poland? God no. I feel the wind whip past us and through the trees.
"I hope we find winged comrade soon, It is cold out here." Russia says as he opens a pack of cigarettes. He brings one to his mouth and rests it softly against his lips. He covers the side the wind is blowing with his hand so he can light it. His actions are smooth, as if he had done this ritual many times. I glance down at the snow covering the ground. Russia is my friend, if I told him he might not...No.
I can't tell a soul. If I do they'll either kill me or lock me up. If they lock me up then I'll be just like my father. A horrible person everyone thanks the lord is behind bars. Russia might be my friend but his father, Soviet, will do everything in his power to have me killed. As they say, 'never trust a German'. My breathing felt heavy again, as if something was constricting me. I stumbled back slightly and held onto a nearby tree trunk for support. My arms begun to shake as I felt my legs give out. I fell onto the freezing ground and began to wheeze. I need air, I need air, I need air.
"Hey, Germany. Focus on me okay? In for four seconds, out for 8 seconds." Russia said as he gently wrapped his jacket around me.I was wearing a jumper that clearly wasn't warm enough for the harsh winter. The jacket was warm and smelt of cinnamon. I tried my best to follow Russia's instructions, it felt impossible at first. I couldn't breathe out for so long, then after a couple of attempts my breathing started to calm down.
"I-... 'm sorry..." I mumble softly as I fumble my way back onto my feet. Russia looks at me with his soft blue eyes before shaking his head.
"No, no sorry. You are worried for your winged comrade. We all are. I will ask Canada and Luxembourg if they could take our area. You need rest." Russia said as he huffed his smoke out of his lungs. The grey smog floated sickly in the air for a moment before disappearing.Russia was now in a singlet, pants and boots. Apart of me wanted to ask how he wasn't frozen in place but the warmth of the jacket begged me to stay quiet. Call me selfish but it was cold out and now I wasn't as cold. Russia flicked the radio on, a few beeps in an order occurred before static came on. He held the button on the side down and began talking.
"Hey, this is Russia and Germany calling in from westward point headed to northern point. Wondering if we can call in back up. Over." Russia said into the mic. A moment or two of static played over the radio before Luxembourg's soft feminine voice piped up.
"This is Luxembourg and Canada checking in, what seems to be the problem? Over."Russia huffed the last of his cigarette before dropping it and stomping it out. I felt awkward standing there while not contributing to the conversation. I suppose the whole reason we are out here is because I contributed. Is it wrong that I hope I get caught? Just so I can breathe easier. No, everyone will hate me for it. I'm so sorry Poland. I'm so sorry that you aren't here anymore, I'm sorry that I am a useless backstabbing friend.
"Germany isn't cooping to well with the search, I wanted to remove ourselves until he feels better. Over." Russia said into the mic, his figure letting go of the button once he is done speaking.I stood there silently as I watched Russia talk to the mic. He made it sound like I was on the verge of a breakdown. I mean, I might be but he shouldn't of phrased it like that. 'Not cooping' jeez. The static came on again for a moment before a new voice came on.
"Peru and Spain on the southern point heading to southeast point. We have something. Over." Peru's harsh voice came on. In an instant there was a mish mash of voices coming on and off, everyone wanted to know what it was.
"Come on, we better check it out before we leave yeah? Could be comrade." Russia said as he started heading for Peru and Spain's location. It was a bit of a walk to their location. Please let it be a false call. Please don't be Poland. Please don't be alive. Please don't hate me. I'm sorry Poland. I should've choosen you, my friend over my family. I listen to the snow underneath my feet squelch and if there is a stick, maybe a crack. Russia is a couple of paces in front of me with the map out. I look at the trees to calm myself from my thoughts. The pale leaves and soft bird sound capture my soul in their beauty.
"Ger-Ma-Ny" I hear a voice call, a soft whisperery voice. I glance at the trees to my left.I see Poland standing there in his signature outfit. Baggy pants, white collar shirt and a light brown sweater underneath. His eyes are white and his body is partly transparent. His wings are clipped yet dripping in crimson blood. There is a large patch of blood soaking through his sweater where grandfather carved the words. For some reason, Poland bared a carved smile too. Was it a punishment? I don't remember seeing him so beat up. The carved smile wasn't there before.
"Germany, what are you staring at?" Russia said, now next to me. I glance at him then back where Poland was.Poland was gone.
"Germany come on, Peru said they found something." Russia said, trying to get me to start walking again. I don't understand, he was right there! He was bleeding yet right there!
"Don't you think... this part of the forest is weird?" I say, trying to comprehend what that was. Russia looks at where I and staring before sighing. He gently picks me up and continues walking towards the others.
"No. The only weird thing going on right now is Poland going missing and you, Germany." Russia said as he pressed on. I swear that was Poland just before. Ghosts aren't real, so it wasn't a ghost. Maybe a hallucination, like when you don't sleep, drink or eat enough.Whatever it was, was Poland.
