Stoick Haddock thrust his bulk through the gap in the jungle. The massive 370 pound Berkian had fought his way through the jungle of Caldera Cay for two weeks and he wasn't going to give up now that he was so close to his goal.

The natives, called the Defenders of the Wing had tried to mislead him but hadn't counted on Stoick's experience with reading body language. After 3 hours of negotiations with the tribe leader, Mala, he had finally found his goal.

Stoick was the leader of BERK the Berkian Exploration and Reconnaissance Kompany. The name always made him grin, his close friend Gobber Belcher had registered the company but had misspelled the name. As Gobber had later said "Well 'ow did I know, eh!" however the name had stuck and BERK was what it had been called. It was made up of conservationists, scientists and normal men and women dedicated to protecting the rarest species on Earth. Black rhinos were not as extinct as the WWF thought and a clouded leopard family had just had its eighth cub. But, Stoick contemplated as he sank his boot into the ash of the volcano what he was looking for now was far more important.

It had started on a misty day in February. Stoick had been celebrating his 3 year old son Hiccup's birthday when their oldest member, Old wrinkly, had stumbled in covered in cuts and bruises and in a state of fevered delirium. Stoick's wife Valka who was a trained nurse had tried to save him but he had been assassinated in the hospital bed he had been healing in. A week later Valka was killed in a car crash and as she died she told Stoick what she had learned from Wrinkly. That dragons still lived. On an ancient island lost in time the last dragon eggs rested, waiting for saviours-or murderers. She had made Stoick promise to save them and as a last act of love for his wife he had agreed.

Bound by his vow Stoick had travelled across the globe searching for clues and, on an island called Wengmadins Island he had found a reference to Calderas Cay. And that was why he was trudging up an active volcano. Reaching the lip he looked over the edge. A stench of sulphur hit his mouth and he gagged. Ignoring his streaming eyes the man pulled himself in. He landed with a thump of ash and rock. Hesitantly he stood-and saw them.

In a natural stone nest seven eggs lay. An azure blue egg with spines on the bottom lay next to a silvery, metallic egg. A putrid green one double the size of the rest lay to one side with a fire red. A black and yellow egg rested against a dull brown one that looked like a rock. But the last one took Stoick's breath away. As dark as ebony with silver streaks it reminded him of star watching with Hiccup. The man gathered them up "As long as I live" he murmured "No one will ever harm you!"

A week later Stoick had reached home having driven so he was not scanned at an airport. He opened the door to see Gobber standing there looking absolutely humiliated and in a pink dress "What th-" Stoick was cut off as his son crashed into him after taking a running leap "Daddy!" the small boy exclaimed.

Hiccup had green eyes like Valka and a mix of their hairs. Built like a baby giraffe with long spindly legs he towered over his friends. Tyler and Rachel Thorston or 'Tuffnut and Ruffnut' as they preferred to be called were twins, both lanky with blonde hair and grey eyes were the troublemakers of the group. Hiccup's best friend Finlay Ingerman or Fishlegs as the Twins had named him was a husky strawberry blonde with a kindly nature and an obsession for plants was standing next to Heather and Derek 'Dagur' Oswaldson Heather was raven haired with green eyes while her brother had the same green eyes but striking ginger hair that stood in spikes. Simon Jorgenson or Snotlout, a jet haired boy with an ego the size of Asia was flirting horribly with Astrid Hofferson, a petite girl with blue eyes, blond hair and a temper with a fuse shorter than a bomb.Stoick grinned.he knew that Hiccup had had a crush on Astrid for years and, that Astrid had always crushed on Hiccup

Stoick laughed, a booming sound that vibrated through the house "Thor Gobber, what happened to you?" the two limbed mechanic scowled. "ell one minute I was getting a coffee and then those two" he shook a fist at the twins "Tripped me, that one, Fishlegs sat on my head and those two put this on me " he jabbed a finger and Astrid and Snotlout and another at his dress "What did Hiccup do?" questioned Stoick, keen to see what his son was like. "Ohhh that one masterminded it" he glared at Hiccup who grinned nervously and inched behind Stoick "That proves it!" The man-mountain yelled "The Haddock genes are in this one two" Hiccup frowned "What jeans" he asked. Stoick grinned "That leader instinct! That's what I'm talking about!" Gobbers unibrow furrowed "Stoick wh... why is your bag smoking"

Cracks emanated from the bag, and a dry heat washed over the groups. Stoick dropped it and backed away. The cracks stopped and out of the sack crawled-dragons. Hiccup stepped forward and reached out his hand. Stoick rushed to help his son-but stopped. Hiccups hand was pressed against the small black dragon's snout "Toothless" he murmured Stoick stared at Gobber as Hiccup beckoned his friends forward "This changes everything" "

The scout ran into a small grey building "Report" a hoarse voice spoke from the shadows. the scout swallowed "You, you were right General, Stoick Haddock has found the dragons. " A bellow ricocheted off the walls "My assassination of his wife should have stopped him" the hoarse voice said. "Watch the house. If the dragons are seen then we can claim them as government resources." The scout nodded, thanking the gods. Those who delivered bad news to the General often ended up in a sack with their throat slit. "Yes, General Bludvist."
