After work on Thursday, Chloe and Lucifer drove up to Ella's apartment. She had recruited (more like nicely forced) them to help her bake five different kinds of Christmas cookies at her place tonight.
She buzzed them up, and soon after, the frantic forensic scientists was pulling them into her makeshift bakery.
Chloe and Lucifer washed their hands while Ella organized all of the ingredients, although, given the size (or lack thereof) of Ella's apartment, cookie dough and ingredients took up nearly every inch of counter space she has.
"Remind me again, what's all of this for?" Lucifer asked.
Ella shrugged and replied uneasily, "Uh, this and that. Most I'll probably take to my church's bake sale this weekend, but then the rest will probably be split between the precinct and my family next week."
Lucifer rolled his eyes and made a snide comment about making treats for his father's sheep, to which, Chloe elbowed him in the ribs.
"Don't hate too much, my dude," Ella replied, "church grandmas make awesome treats! Some of the best baked goods I ever had growing up came from my abuelita's church friends."
Looking slightly confused, Lucifer added, "But...you're not a grandmother."
Ignoring him, Chloe and Ella set to deciding which cookie to make first. They decided to start simple and placed rows of pre-cut sugar cookie dough from a large box.
"When these come out, we can decorate them, and that's always been my favorite part." Ella decided.
As the first two trays they put in the oven finished baking, Lucifer pulled them out and set them on a cooling rack while Chloe traded the space with another two sheets of cookies.
A few minutes later, the three of them were seated around Ella's very small kitchen table with five tubs of frosting and seven bottles of sprinkles. They had set one of the already baked sheets aside to keep just as plain sugar cookies, and the other sheet will be the cookies they can decorate.
The three of them took globs of red, green, white, and blue frosting and lathered the cookies in them. Chloe's and Ella's first few cookies looked a little rough and needed a few frosting touch-ups, but they improved the more they frosted. Lucifer's, of course, looked straight out of a professional bakery from the very first cookie.
"So not fair." Ella grumbled.
Lucifer chuckled and replied, "Years of practice with frosting, Miss Lopez."
He glanced quickly at Chloe and she glanced back with confusion. Then the way he waggled his eyebrows put two and two together in Chloe's head.
"Oh! Seriously?" She exclaimed after a moment, which made Lucifer bust out with laughter.
"Does everything have to be about sex with you?" She asked.
Lucifer chuckled, "No! Of course not. I was talking about...cookies, Detective." He held up and lightly examined the treat.
Chloe rolled her eyes, "Like hell you were."
Ella was laughing hard enough across from them that she had discarded her cookies to clutch at her aching sides.
Later, they had finished baking all of the sugar cookies. Now, Lucifer was frosting and putting sprinkles on the last batch of them, while Chloe and Ella were preparing batter for peanut butter cup and Hershey cookies as they gossiped and laughed the night away.
Neither Chloe nor Lucifer noticed that Ella had grown increasingly quiet and now she was gnawing nervously at her bottom lip.
"I gotta tell you guys something." Ella blurted out suddenly, her eyes a bit wider than normal.
