TRIGGER WARNING: R*PE
At Seattle Grace Hospital, it was one of those nights. A night where there was that one case that everyone wanted to go well, it was a young girl, who couldn't have been more than 14 or 15 years old. She was raped, shot in the neck right above the carotid artery, and then dumped ou t on the street in front of the hospital. Meredith Grey, a new general attending, had finished her shift when she found her bleeding out behind her car. "I NEED SOME HELP!" She ordered, applying pressure to the girl's wounded neck. "Sweetheart, I need you to stay awake." Meredith told her, as a herd of nurses came over with a stretcher.
"Oh my God..." A nurse said, turning away from them, not able to handle the sight. "I need someone to page cardio and trauma immediately." Meredith spoke, handing her purse off to a nurse who took off running inside. "Sweetie, I'm Dr. Grey. You're at Seattle Grace, can you tell me your name?" She asked, climbing on top of the stretcher while never letting go of the wound. "I-I don't know." She said, her voice weak, her body draining of color. "Okay, that's okay. I need you to stay awake for me." Meredith repeated, the girl nodded, but her eyes slowly closed. "Damn it." Meredith breathed as they burst through the ER doors, causing everyone's eyes to fly to them. "Trauma room 2." Owen Hunt, the Trauma Attending on call barked. When the wheels slid to a stop, Meredith hopped off, her hands turning numb.
"I found her outside, she was left in the parking lot. She's lost a lot of blood." Meredith said as Owen began to put in a central line.
"I need you to pack the wound and then get gowned and gloved. She's losing too much blood and we need to get her to the OR. Where is Yang?!" Owen snapped, looking at Lexie.
"I paged her 911, she should be here." Lexie said, turning to a nurse. "Page her again." Lexie pleaded, knowing that she was not in Owen's good graces right now.
"No need, I'm here. What do we got?" Cristina asked, gloves and a gown already on.
"Teenage girl, GSW to the neck right above the carotid." Owen said, not even bothering to glance Cristina's way.
"This is the 4th one we've gotten this month." Cristina said, her face sombering as she took in the young girl's appearance. "How many bags of blood has she gone through?" Cristina asked, turning to the nurse.
"5, nearly 6." She said, looking at the bag hanging up now.
"Her heartbeat is weak, if we have any chance of saving her, we need to get to an OR now." Meredith said, motioning for a young intern to make the call. "We don't have time to scrub." Meredith said, unlocking the wheels of the stretcher, starting to run.
"EVERYONE OUT OF THE WAY." Owen's loud voice carried over the whole ER, causing everyone to stop talking.
"Hold the elevator!" Meredith called, hearing the pale girl on the stretcher struggle to breathe. "Hold on a little longer." Cristina said, taking the girl's hand in her own. "Should I page Derek?" Cristina asked, causing both Owen and Meredith to shoot her a questioning look.
"Why-Oh my God, you're a genius." Meredith cut herself off as she realized what Cristina was talking about. "Every single other patient that has been treated here has developed a blood clot in their brain. We need to get ahead of it this time." Meredith said, turning towards Lexie. "He was supposed to meet me at the house, he can't be very far from the hospital. Page him." She said, her eyes going wide as she saw the dressing starting to come off. Owen lunged forward, applying hard pressure to keep her from bleeding out. Meredith took Owen's scrub cap from his pocket, putting it on his head, knowing all the time that they could save was valuable. "Damn it, she's losing too much blood." Cristina said, pressing the open button a million times. The elevator dinged, slowly opening the doors.
"No pulse." Meredith called, climbing on the stretcher as she began CPR. They ran faster, knowing if her heart didn't start back up soon, then she'd be dead. The stretcher skidded to a halt in the middle of the OR, Meredith jumped off, turning towards the nurse who was holding the defibrillator paddles. "Charge to 200." Meredith called, letting Owen put the pads on her chest.
"Clear!" Cristina called, causing everyone to stop touching the patient, who was now being referred to as Jane Doe.
"Asystole." A nurse called, causing Meredith to rub the paddles together. "Charge to 300...clear." Meredith called, anxiously looking up at the monitor. "We have a rhythm." They immediately put on their gowns and gloves, knowing a small infection because they didn't scrub would be better than having a teenage girl die...
Hours later the young girl was in ICU, in critical but stable condition. "Doctor Grey?" A nurse said, motioning for Meredith to come over. "The police are here, they need to speak with you." Meredith nodded, stretching out her arms. She was not only in the OR for her general surgery, which was repairing the busted carotid, but also for her husband's, Derek Shepherd, part of the young girl's surgery. He had to do a craniotomy, in order to fully evacuate the clot. Her head was now fully shaven and she was going to have visible scars for the rest of her life, reminding her of the trauma that she had endured. Meredith went into the young girls room, watching as the ventilator breathed for her.
Why would someone hurt someone so innocent? As she checked on her vitals one last time, she took the young girls hand in hers, knowing how scared she must be. They ran her blood through a DNA matcher, eventually finding a match, her name is Paige Elliott. A 15 year old girl. She was only 15 and she was raped, the only reason they even knew that is because of all of the small, hickey like bruises littering her body. When her parents arrived, Meredith was going to have to break the news that their 15 year old daughter was not only kidnapped, shot in the neck, and left in the parking lot to die, but she was also raped. She was going to have to ask the difficult question: "Would you like a rape kit done for your daughter?"
"You're okay now, Paige. We're going to let your parents know what's going on. You won't be alone any longer." Meredith said as she gently let go of her hand. Meredith made her way down to the lobby of the hospital, seeing 3 officers talking to Doctor Webber, the Chief of surgery.
"Meredith! I was just about to page you, they need to talk to you about Paige Elliott." He said, motioning for them to go and talk in the empty conference room.
"So, walk us through when you found her." One of the officers said, sitting down in an empty chair.
"I had just finished my scheduled shift about to get into my car when I noticed a leg. I ran behind my car, where Paige was laying, barely conscious. She was bleeding from her neck, it wasn't just bleeding, the blood was coming out in clots. The biggest clots I have ever seen from a gunshot wound. She didn't remember anything, most likely because of the blood clot in her brain. She was so pale and looked so scared." Meredith recalled, watching as the officers wrote on their notepads.
"Did you see anything out of the ordinary?" Another asked, the others nodded in agreement, as if there was a set of preplanned questions.
"There was this black SUV that sped up after I found her that I've never seen before." Meredith remembered, her eyes glossing over as she went back to that moment.
"There will be FBI agents coming by the hospital tomorrow morning to ask you and Paige's family a few questions, assuming that they are up for it." The officers stood up going over towards Meredith with soft smiles.
"Okay, I'm assuming you'll be along with them?" She asked, and they nodded, putting their hats back on. "Here's my pager number if you have any more questions." Meredith said, handing them a card.
"Dr.Grey?" One of the officers asked, causing Meredith to look back to them, a questioning look on her face. "You saved that girl's life."
