The sound of soft guitar woke up Mai and she started pawing her bed to shut off her alarm. Rolling over, she sat up in bed and stretched. She looked around her room and realized that her parents must have shut her TV off when they came home. Mai rubbed her eyes and made her way to her bathroom, deciding to take a quick shower before getting ready for the day. Ten minutes later, she came out and grabbed the hair dryer, taking it to the room. It was a beautiful day outside. There was still snow on the ground but it was starting to melt, making way for spring to spread its seeds and bloom. Mai, with her hair now dry, shuffled her playlist and smiled when Wings by Imagine Dragons started playing. She sang along with the song and chose an outfit to suit the weather and her great mood.
Mai came downstairs dressed in a pair of black leggings, a loose cream coloured blouse, and a black cardigan on top. She slid into the kitchen and smiled at her mom who was on the kitchen island experimenting with a new recipe. "Hey mom, whatcha making?" she asked, making her way to her and kissing her cheek before turning to the coffeemaker. "I'm making banana walnut muffins with chocolate chips, want a taste?" she asked, lifting her spoon. Mai took a bit of batter on her finger and hummed. "It tastes awesome mom. Maybe you should give me these as payment for taking my car yesterday." She winked and grabbed her favourite mug from the cabinet and filled it with coffee and creamer before taking a seat on the island bar stool. "Sure, I don't mind love. Would you like one now?"
"No, Teddy went to visit his great uncle with his mom and won't be back for a week or two." She responded, taking a sip of coffee. Mai made a face at the taste and groaned when her mom raised the sugar bowl. "How could I forget?" She muttered spooning some in and taking another sip, satisfied with the flavour. Mai finished her coffee and grabbed a granola bar before heading to the front door. "Oh! Before I forget Mom, Sydney has a concert next week, I promised to attend with Tess, Jax, and Mikey. Thought I should let you know." She said, putting on her brown ankle boots and slipping out the door.
'Not too long until my birthday.' She thought, looking at her surroundings. Because of the weather, Mai decided to bus to university to enjoy the weather some more. She fixed her backpack and walked briskly to the bus stop. It wasn't long after she reached the stop that the bus appeared. She scanned her bus pass and smiled at the driver before taking a seat near the back. She took out her phone and started texting Seth. Seth was a friend of hers back when she was living with the same foster family as him. It wasn't a great experience and Seth was always there to wipe her tears and chase away her fears. She loved him as much as she loved her brother.
'Morning your highness!' -Mai
'Hey princess!' -Seth
'You have class today?' -Mai
'Yeah, I'm waiting for the bus to come.' -Seth
'I'm headed to class right now.' -Mai
'Hey, are you doing anything today? Sydney told me about a concert she's playing in and I wanted to get a new dress to wear.' -Mai
'I have one class and a practise today, I can come hang after practise. I have a solo in the concert this time so you can look forward to that ;)' -Seth
'Of course!' -Mai
'See you in three hours!' -Mai
Mai put her phone in her pocket and pulled on the chain to stop. She walked to the front of the bus and hopped onto the sidewalk, walking the 5 minutes to the entrance to the earth sciences building. Mai quickly took the elevator to the third floor and crossed two hallways to get to her class. Mikey was already sitting near the middle of the room, his backpack holding a place for her. He didn't see her walk into class and didn't realize she was near him until she ruffled his silver and black hair. "What- oh, it's you." He said, taking his earbuds out. "You realize there are thousands of other ways you can tell me you're here." He glared at Mai and moved his bag to the floor. "Yes, but what fun is it if I can't bug you?" She grinned and sat down, taking her report out of her bag. "I'm going to go submit this and come back here." She told him and walked to Professor Mathieson's desk. "Here you are sir." She said with a smile. The old professor grunted in response and took it from her hands. Mai rolled her eyes and walked back to her seat. Somewhere, a 9 o'clock alarm rung and Professor Mathieson stood up, walking to the podium in the centre of the class and began speaking. 'Here go another two hours.' Mai sighed and opened her laptop to take notes.
