After breakfast, I take a quick shower and throw my hair into a messy braid. I pull on some clothes and walk into Annie's room. She's picked out her own outfit.

I have too keep myself from laughing. She's pulled on a pink and white striped top, a green and yellow polka dot skirt, and multicoloured socks.

"Momma! I picked out my own clothes today!" She says proudly.

"I can see! Didn't daddy put your clothes out?"

"Nope." She says, exaggerating the "p" sound.

"How about you wear this outfit? It's picture day at your school." I tell her.

"No!" She cries

"Don't you want to wear a pretty dress?" I ask.

"This is pretty!" She exclaims.

"Of course it is! But how about we wear a new dress?" I try to persuade.

Her eyes widen.

"A new dress?"

"Brand. New." I say.

A smile comes across her lips.

"Yes!!"

I undress her and pull on a plain white t-shirt, pale green sundress, and white sandals. The sundress has a white flower on the pocket.

"Wow," she breathes, "it's so pretty!"

"Now, how about that hair?"

"Can you braid it?" She asks sweetly.

"Of course."

I part her hair in two halves and french braid it. Then I tie the ends with white ribbon.

"There," I say satisfied, "now your ready."

Annie's school is a 10 minute drive from home, so we have to leave early.

"Buckle up!" I say to Annie as I start the car.

There is no answer but I hear her seatbelt click.

The car ride is silent.

"You're going to look beautiful today, sweetie!" I say to break the silence.

I look in the mirror and I see a big smile on her cute little face.
