Thomas couldn't help but smile. Anna definitely was something else. He knew her behaviour was only to mask her feelings, she didn't want to feel vulnerable so that was her weapon. But still he could not get over the shock to find her there and that she figured his problem. He knew that going to that bar was a challenge but it was the only way to find the truth.
Even if in the past days his mind was preoccupied with Anna, in the evening before falling asleep his wife was there and for this reason he had to find out the truth on his own.
He had a thought that didn't give him peace, maybe Anna showed up in his life to help him, after all she was working there. He spent the next three hours drinking orange juice that Anna kept bringing him. They didn't speak but he smiled at her every time she passed by his table and she rolled her eyes every single time.
It was visible that Anna was the attraction of the bar, everyone was calling her, she caried pints of beer with a smile on her face and she was dancing, she knew all her customers by their names, but Thomas could not miss the sad face she was having from time to time. And another thing that he didn't miss was that she checked on him from time to time and all the juice she brought him definitely meant something for her.
A few hours later he was the last customer from Aphrodite. He called Anna to pay his bill, but Anna did not want to charge him.
'Thank you. I will go and wait for you at the car.'
'I don't need your driving services, thanks' and Anna winked at him.
'I will drive you home Anna' and he left before she could protest. Twenty minutes later after she cleaned the place and said goodbye to the other girls, Anna found Thomas out waiting for her. She got in his car, she was too cold to wait for another ride.
'Why are you a creep and follow me every where?' and she slammed the door.
'Easy tigress.' and indeed she was a tigress, it was a challenge for Thomas not to stare at her body the whole time.
'Easy? How about you leave me alone?'
'Why do you work here?
' Why do you care? As a stalker I think you must know. Look, I am broke, I don't have money to give you if this is why you are following me.' Thomas started to laugh.
'Oh no!' she screamed. 'Do you want to kill me? Why? I am just an average girl, I want to finish high school and I can't leave Caleb alone, you know, that happy little kid and wants to play games with you. Oh I was so stupid I brought him to your house, he....' Thomas stopped the car and looked at her.
'Are you done Miss Brown? I didn't follow you. I don't stalk you, it was a shock to see you there. It is nice to know that you want to finish high school, just don't be late at my classes and try not to be rude anymore. Why do you work here Anna? Is it about the car? '
' I will have my car back tomorrow thanks to a very generous tip. And I am tired of all your questions. I work there because I make money for me and Caleb. I have to work only two days per week and it is enough for us to survive. Happy now? '
'I can help you find another job.'
'I don't know why you care what I do. Does your wife know you are out and stalking your student?' Thomas looked hurt and he tightened the steering wheel. He closed his eyes for a few seconds and looked at the beautiful girl next to him. He wasn't ready to share his story, but he knew she was right and things seemed to be from the outside just like she said.
'My wife is not a part of my life anymore.' Anna looked at his hand.
'But you still want her to be.'
'Well, life does not ask us what we want, we have to live with what it gives us.' they looked at each other and it passed a while before Anna broke the ice to say something.
'Do you really want to help me?'
'Yes.'
'Good, drive me to the closest take away.'
'Anna, I am serious, I can help you find another job.'
'Do what I say before I change my mind.' she turned her head and was staring in the dark. Thomas sighed and started driving. When they arrived there Anna ordered 30 burgers menus and Thomas asked her what was going on.
'Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you have in your mind.' said Anna and smiled at him.
'Wow, giving me David Allen quotes, ok, I will not ask you.'
'Perfect. Let me enjoy the night.' she gave him an address and after 20 minutes they were there. He parked in front of an alley were many homeless people found a shelter, there were many tents and fires lit in front of the tents. Anna and Thomas got out of the car and Anna led the way. They stopped in front of the first tent and Anna called someone.
'Ben!' and a man in his 40s came out. They hugged and Anna gave him a menu and some coins. She introduced Thomas to him and they continued to the same for the next half of hour.
'We have one last stop to see Mrs. Fisher.'
'What is her story?'
'She used to be our neighbour from the trailer park but she didn't have enough money to pay the rent so she was evicted last year.' An old woman got out of the tent, she hugged Anna for a while.
'My darling, I missed you. How is my little Caleb?'
'He is great but he also misses you, come and see him one day.'
'I can't come sweetie, I smell and I can't remember the last time I took a shower.'
'we love you even if you stink' and they both laughed and hugged again. Thomas was simply amazed by the girl in front of him. She had so much love to give, she was wise and smart, she was letting in her life only the people who deserved it. Mrs. Fisher looked at him.
'What a nice man you got Anna, beautiful and tall just like you and if he didn't run from us keep it.' and she winked at Thomas.
'We are not together Mrs. Fisher.' Anna told her.
'You should be.' Anna quickly changed the subject but Thomas saw the blushing from her face. The light of the fire was only contemplating her beauty, she looked happy, she smiled like she never did around the others, she didn't care that she hugged all that people. Anna was special.
'Can we go now?'
'Yes, sure.' Thomas hugged Mrs Fisher and they left.
'Thank you.' he told her after a few minutes of silence.
'What for?'
'For showing me this part of you, of life. It helped me realise some things.'
'It was the first time I brought someone here.'
'Do you come here often?'
'Unfortunately not, but I try to be here at least once a month.' the conversation flew and shortly they were in front of Anna's place.
'We are here Miss Brown.'
'Thank you for the ride.' Anna looked at him, she looked at his perfect jaw, his short beard that she wanted so badly to touch it and feel it against her skin. It was pure desire, a desire that she never felt it for someone. She looked again at his hand that was resting on the steering wheel and realised that she will remain with the desire forever. 'Good night Mr. Davidson.'
The next morning Caleb woke her up very early.
'Wake up, wake up, they are here!' he screamed. She was too sleepy to understand something but she followed her little brother that was dragging her outside. To her surprise she saw Mrs Fisher standing in front of their trailer. She was cleaned up and smiling at them.
' Good morning my favourite neighbours! It's so good to be home!' she told them and they all hugged. While they were chatting Anna looked at the road and she saw her car and next to her was standing Thomas with his arms crossed, but with a big smile on his face.
