I want to go back. I know I'm too connected to the past, but when all you have is memories and a broken heart, the past feels like home.
I looked at the shattered glass on the road. Only hours before had there been the bleeding body of my best friend. The accident scene had been cleared up already. All that remained was the glass bits that could easily thrash bare skin.
But even bleeding from glass felt better than what I knew. She was gone. The paramedics knew that once they touched her lifeless body. But I didn't cry. I just felt numb.
I felt an ache in my stomach as I walked away from the middle of the street. I went to the one place my memories took me at the moment. I could feel the squish of the lush green grass under my shoes as the pastel sky flew over me. Except this time the sky was only grey. Clouds covered everything, even the brightest lights starting to peep out.
Despite the darkness, I'll I could do was lay down, and think back to memories. I couldn't handle my present reality.

I wanted to stay home from school but I ended up going anyway. In home room, I found out two kids were absent. The teacher didn't tell the class why, but I knew already. Finally someone asked and the teacher told us about Abby's death and why her brother wasn't at school.
I breathed heavily as she told the story.
"Abby's mother took too sharp of a turn and crashed. Abby didn't survive." The teacher looked as if she was holding back tears.
As much as I wanted it to be, I knew that wasn't the entire story.
Usually Abby took the bus or went home with me, but that day her mother took her home. Now a mother taking her child home and getting into an accident because of a mistake may seem like pure misfortune.
However, the scent of alcohol changed all that.
Growing up with Abby as my best friend, I learned they're were three types of adults.
The adults who don't drink.
The adults who drink responsibly
And the adults who drink to escape every pain and sorrow.
Abby's mother were the 3rd type.
Abby never liked talking about her mom. And her dad was mostly gone so she didn't bring him up either. She also had a brother, whom she hardly saw as well. I knew he was in our school but there were so many kids that I never was motivated enough to pick him out from the crowds at lunch time. In fact, Abby spent so much time with my family and I, she felt like a sister to me.
So when I walked to my next class alone, the halls seemed empty. Somewhere in my mind, I had convinced myself that Abby was simply on vacation. It just seemed like a lie that she was dead. I had only seen her cheerful smile earlier that week.
Or maybe I just couldn't handle that if she was dead, it was my fault.
