"Hey, you're Lodi right?" A boy with brown eyes asked as my last class ended.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"Do you know when the funeral is? I assume they're having one- but I don't know if they're inviting only family or- well I'm just curious." He seemed a little awkward asking me.
I realized he was talking about Abby. I shook my head, "I... I don't have any info."
"Okay, thanks. By the way, my name's Alven."
I gave him a polite glance then stood up to grab my backpack.
After school, Abby and I would usually walk to the hill nearby and hang out on the grass and do homework. By the time we finished, the sun would be setting, and we'd try to see who could spot Venus first. She had come up with that game when we were 6 and we had done it every day since. Even if I was on vacation, she would call me in time and I would do the same when she was away from home. However, today it hurt to walk up the hill without her. I hadn't brought a coat with me and my arms were freezing. I decided to walk home.
Looking back at the hill, a weird cloud of vague emotion filled my chest and I ran for my home.
When I had finished my homework, my mom called me into the kitchen for dinner. I didn't feel like eating, but I had felt weak all day and needed some food. I forced myself to finish what was on my plate, then went to go take a shower and get ready for bed.
As I got into bed, my clock beeped 11:00 P.M. I felt extremely tired, but a weird jumble of thoughts kept me up. Fractured thoughts realizing I would never share a memory with Abby again stabbed my heart.
Finally when it was well past midnight, I stood up and put on my coat. Somehow I ended up on the hill. The moonlight was my only guiding light. I was about to sit down on the grass when I felt my heart rate speed up. A shadow had moved. My heart began beating harder as the shadow seemed to get closer.
The shadow lit up and showed the outline of a person. I must be hallucinating but I was almost certain he looked like Abby. He had on a blue t-shirt and navy sweatpants, similar style to Abby. The moon lit up his eyes and face, shaped like Abby's. Even his hair was the same jet-black color like hers.
I knew quite well it could have been a coincidence but I assumed anyway, "You're Abby's brother."
The boy went silent.
"Abigail Evans."
"Yes," he answered.
Something inside of me broke and suddenly, I couldn't face the boy in front of me knowing what I didn't do to save his sister.
