"Abby and I met in kindergarten. We spent a ton of time together and had more play dates and sleepovers than I could count. My favorite memory of Abby was when we were little. It was my birthday. She and I were laying down together on the grass in my backyard. The sun was setting. Stars were beginning to show up. However one very bright star caught Abigail's eye. She pointed it out to me. That was no star though. That was the planet Venus."
I looked at the audience, tears welling up in my eyes.
"Abby came up with this idea. Her idea was that we should promise on Venus to be BBFs." I began choking up but I continued, "Every time I see that light show up in the evening, I think of my amazing best friend. Abby, I'm sorry I don't get to see Venus with you anymore. But you will always be my best friend."
I managed to get off stage in time before I completely lost it and started sobbing. Shaun squeezed my hand and didn't let go till the funeral was over.
