Christmas Through A Child's Eyes

I don't remember the last time I saw you;
All I can recall is the sweet scent of a Christmas candle.
I hope you know I love you, I really do.
And losing you was a lot to handle.
My little cousins, just seven and nine years old;
Just wondering what time Santa will show.
The love I feel for them is a story that will forever be told;
How lucky am I to have had two perfect people to know.

What I would give to be attacked by their hugs when I'd come home for the holidays;
I just want one more mischievous smile; as they devour the turkey glaze.
What I would give to hand them their gifts in person;
I just what one more silly, sweet moment.
What I would give to see Christmas through a child's eyes again;
I just want one more Christmas that never ends.

Family gatherings can be stressful things;
Remember when grandad and our aunt would do nothing but sing.
Or what about the time my brother pranked the whole family by pretending to be a burglar?
I still remember their worried faces, painted in the unsure.
With just the Christmas tree lights illuminating our family reunion;
Oh, how I miss our blood-forced unions.

What I would give to be attacked by their hugs when I'd come home for the holidays;
I just want one more mischievous smile; as they devour the turkey's glaze.
What I would give to hand them their gifts in person;
I just what one more silly, sweet moment.
What I would give to see Christmas through a child's eyes again;
I just want one more Christmas that never ends.

In the blink of an eye, five years go by.
My little cousins would be twelve and fourteen now.
I pause, staring at the snow, and I cry;
As I realise in this very moment, they aren't mine to know.
To know where they are, but above all else, to know if they're happy;
I can't know because they aren't here with me.
Christmas has a funny way of reminding us of life lost;
A remembrance decorated in the coldest of frost.
But I will fall asleep on this Christmas Eve;
Holding my family firmly in my heart;
Perhaps, when I awake I'll find at the foot of the tree;
Two children and a Christmas miracle beside the hearth.
