Cullen watched the sickening scene, his body frozen with fear.

There was nothing he could do about it. No way for him to get to the blond man protecting him, much less help him.

Cullen tried to call out, but his lips made no sound.

This couldn't be the end. That man should not die for Cullen; he wasn't worth it.

Hot, wet tears silently slid down his face, wetting his black jerkin.

"Stay safe" were the two words the man told him.

Cullen wished that he could tell the one risking his life those same words, though he knew the words would not reach the man in time.

He shuddered as he heard the sound of bones crushing and the man's gasp as one must have pierced something inside.

Cullen covered his ears but the sounds of the man drowning in his own blood seeped through.

Soon, the terrible sounds stopped.

He drew close to himself, burying his face in his arms.

He didn't look up but knew from the crunching of snow and dragging of a body that the man's body was hurled off the cliff by the goblin he fought.
