Katie’s POV
No one of us said anything during the whole car journey to his house. The radio was softly playing some rock music and I was looking out of the window, watching houses and cars flying by. My head felt a little better now, thank god. It was a beautiful day but I was still somewhat confused on what was happening. I could feel Brian glancing over to me every now and then. Probably to check if I was still there.
We were currently waiting at a traffic light when I noticed some very familiar tunes coming from the radio station. Curious I turned the music up a bit and turned back to the outside world, humming along to the song.
“Do you like it?” Brian asked after a little while, making me look at him in confusion.
“What?”
“The song. You’ve been humming along for a while now.” He said with a soft smile on his lips.
“Ugh ... yeah, I like it. I think I have heard it before. It’s really cool.” I smiled too and he nodded, letting me listen to the music again. He took a few turns and soon pulled into a street, lined by very impressive and beautiful houses.
“Would you like to get to know the band?” His deep voice pulled me out of my gawking.
“What? You mean … the guys who played ‘Afterlife’?” I asked in confusion. Brian nodded.
“Yeah. As chance would have it I know these guys.”
“No kidding.” My eyes nearly fell out of their sockets when he nodded again.
“I’m actually best friends with them.” He grinned and I felt my jaw drop. I was so in awe that I didn’t notice him pulling into a drive way and parking the car. Brian turned off the engine and turned to look at my shocked face. I was still gawking at him, eyes and mouth wide open. That’s when he broke into this beautiful laughter.
“Oh baby, you’re amazing.” He chuckled and closed my mouth by pushing up my jaw with his index and middle finger. Him being so amused by my reaction made me blush madly but at the same time I was glad I could make him laugh. It took off the awkwardness a bit.
But then his eyes turned dark again. It made me frown as I tried to read what was bothering him. I didn’t want to see him upset. Happiness suited him so much better than this gloomy and sad look.
His hand lightly cupped my cheek. I could feel the calloused skin on his palm and fingers, making me even more curious about him. His thumb gently caressed my cheekbone, sending soft shivers down my spine.
“So sad …” He merely whispered and I knew what he meant. Brian missed me. The old me. The Katie that he shared memories with. But she felt so far away; so out of reach. I started to feel bad for coming back.
“Come on.” He said with a sigh, “I’ll show you your home.” I nodded and we broke apart to climb out of the car.
What can I say, his house was beautiful. It was a two story mansion in the typical Californian style with palm trees and exotic-flowering plants in the small front yard and a garage, big enough for two vehicles. The front door seemed massive in its dark brown color and was guarded by two decorative box trees.
I followed Brian slowly as I was looking around, taking in every detail. But nothing triggered my memory yet. He unlocked the door and held it open for me with a soft smile. I returned it and stepped inside. Looking around I found myself in this beautiful hallway with a big staircase leading up to the second floor. I was so in awe; I couldn’t believe that this used to be my home.
