[THREE WEEKS LATER]

The day Louis' album dropped was probably one of the most emotionally challenging ones of his life.

The morning of, at about four in the morning, he woke me up.

"Love?" Louis shook my shoulder and spoke softly. I blinked and groaned.

"Hm?" I asked. He was silent. I rolled around to face him and forced my eyes open. "Lou?"

"My mum isn't here," Louis whispered.

"Oh," I whispered. "Oh, Lou."

"She's not here," he whispered again. I sat up on the bed and pulled him up with me. "I know she's been gone for a long time but-"

"It's okay that it hurts," I said softly. "Especially today. It's a big day, and it's understandable that you want your mom here with you."

"She should be here," he croaked. I reached back and turned the lamp on. Tears were already dripping down his cheeks. I had to wonder how long he laid next to me breaking down before he woke me up.

Seeing Louis so broken, and knowing there was nothing I could do? It hurt.

"Come here," I mumbled. I opened my arms and Louis fell into me, sobbing. At times like this, it was easy to remember that we were still young. I was 22 and he was 25. We should have had parents.

Instead, we had each other.

"I- fuck-"

"Sh." I kissed the hair on the top of his head and then pressed my cheek onto it. I scratched his back softly, something that I found him doing for me a lot. I assumed it was a habit he picked up from his mother. Anyways, he seemed to find some type of comfort in it.

I adjusted myself until I was in his lap, which allowed me to hold him even closer. Louis pushed his face into the crook of my neck. His shoulders shuttered.

I remembered, about three years ago, when his mother Johanna had first passed away.

[THREE YEARS EARLIER]

Didge, Poe, Carly and I were all together in one dorm room, baking cookies and singing along to christmas music. My phone rang, and I dusted my hands off on my shorts before I picked it up to check the caller ID.

"That's weird," I said, "it's an unknown number." Poe turned the music down.

"Answer it," Carly prompted. I did what she said and slid the answer button over, before pressing the phone to my ear.

"Hello?" I asked expectantly.

"Hi. My name is Dr. Carter Brown from St. Mercy hospital in London. Am I reaching Mickey Horan?" My face dropped and I backed out of the kitchen, into the shared bedroom.

"You are," I said.

"Mickey, I'm calling about the welfare of Ms. Johanna Deakin." Louis' mom. "Her oldest son left here a few hours ago and hasn't returned. I wouldn't reach out to you unless I had to, and you're his emergency contact."

"I am?"

"Will you please talk to him?" the doctor asked. "His mother is running out of time and hiding from that is only going to leave him with regret."

"Oh," I whispered. "Yeah, uh, I'll talk to him. Can you give me his number?"

"You're his emergency contact and you don't have his phone number?"
