Pov: Bambina
"Da only way we'se goin to Hattan is if we'se all go together." Those exact words that Pete said repeat in my head. Afterall, that's exactly what we're doing.
I stand, watching Danny, Hector, and some other kid named Les play tag.
I sneak up towards Slider, elbowing his side. He looks down at me, smiling. I smile right back. "It's good to see them make a friend." I say, looking towards Danny and Hector.
"You got that right, they got each other, but lord, Caithfidh sé uaigneach a fháil." He says, switching into speaking Irish. I raise my eyebrows at him, and he explains. "It must get lonely. Being the only kid Newsies in The Bronx. They ought to be going to school, or to a playground, or...." He falls silent.
A sad heavy knowingness fills the air between us.
"They should. But they can't. When we were their age, we had to work too." I say sadly.
"It's not fair." He says, bluntly.
"It's not, but it's how it is." We fall into a comfortable silence, just watching the boys playing tag. Hector has a large smile plastered on his face, Danny is laughing and running away from Les- who's chasing him.
I notice one of the Manhattan Newsies is watching him -very carefully, mind you; but he's smiling as well. They must be brothers. Either by blood, or my choice.
"You got any plans for today?" Sliders asks, his irish accent thick as ever.
I shake my head, "Not really. I sold all my papes already.
"I was thinking about maybe going to little Italy. But..." I trail off.
"But there's no way in hell any of us will let you- unless we all come."
I huff, "It's a little ridiculous. I mean, it's broad daylight. I could just take Smalls and maybe one other person with me-"
"You'll have to ask Pete about that, Deer. I'm not going to get involved." He jokes, interrupting me.
"Yeah, but-" I fall short when I see her, Katherine.
She's staring directly at me, and I can't help the smile form on my face. I carefully tip my hat at her, making sure my hair doesn't fall out.
"Who'sa that?" Pecks asks, popping from behind me.
I just look at him, a smile on my face.
Peck's eyes go wide, "Jesus, Deer. What'se did ya do now?"
"I have no clue what you're talking about." I tease.
Sliders smirks at me, then shakes his head side to side. "We can't tie you down, can we?" He jokes.
"I just made a friend, that's all."
"She aint look like no one I'se seen round here. Wit er fancy clothes en such." Pecks says, blantally.
"She's a reporter for the new york sun." I explain.
Both of them have a look of surprise on their faces. "Really?" Sliders asks. I nod.
"I'se didn't know goils could get em jobs like dat." Pecks says.
"More power to her." Sliders says, but we quiet down as we see her waltz over.
