Diana:
No one else had found out; the doctor was as good as his word. He had spoken to me kindly, but every now and then, a look of disgust had flickered across his face. It was gone as quick as it had occurred, but it had still made me uncomfortable. I already knew that it wasn’t good to be pregnant and not married; I didn’t need a doctor to tell me that!
I was on the way back to the market. There were no longer any fights at the shops over food; things seemed to have settled down, and for that I was grateful; I wasn’t prepared to get up two hours early just so we could have a decent meal!
Mum wasn’t too angry. Occasionally we fought, but they were merely out of shock of the situation. She was actually quite excited to become a grandmother, “However,” she warned, “If Matthew doesn’t come back soon, and if you still aren’t married when it’s born, it will have to be given away.”
I had nodded grimly after a heated dispute. I couldn’t keep the baby if it was going to bring shame to the family- not that it was the baby’s fault… it was mine.
I hadn’t heard from Matthew for around a month, and I was beginning to get a larger stomach. I tried to avoid leaving the house, but if need be, I had taken to wearing Mum’s clothes instead of mine, as they were bigger. No one suspected-though I did get some strange looks from passers-by for wearing clothes that were four sizes too big… It was strange to think that there was a living thing inside of me.
I reached home, lifted up my arm which was drowning in the enormous sleeves of the coat I was wearing. Mum answered the door. She looked happier than normal, a large smile planted across her face.
“Wha…” I didn’t even manage to finish before she opened the door and I saw…
“Matthew!” I cried, dropping the bread I had been carrying and rushing across the room. He was there. He looked so real, could this be another dream I had had of him coming back? Would I wake up and there would be riots over food, would the chair that I was staring at be empty? We embraced, and he held me close. This was no dream; this was real.
“Why didn’t you right to say that you were coming back?” I whispered into him,
“I thought you’d like a surprise he murmured and I smiled.”
“You like surprises do you?” I said nervously, and he nodded, “Got one?”
“Well…yes…”
“Well go on then,”
“I’m pregnant,” I said before I could make it more awkward. Matthew’s mouth curved slowly into a smile.
“I’m going to be a daddy?”
“Yes,”
“I’m going to be a daddy!” he cried happily, and pulled me even closer
“Careful!” I laughed, “The baby!”
He let go, “Sorry.”
I looked at him. Something wasn’t right,
“Why don’t you stand up?”
“I can’t.”
“What do you mean you can’t?”
“I got a disease, and now I can’t walk. Might be another six months before I can walk.”
“Are you ok?”
“Until I stand, yeah.”
I pulled up a chair next to him, and sat. “Matthew- you can’t… tell anyone about the baby,”
“Why not?” he laughed,
“Because we’re not married. After the wedding, then we can tell people,”
He paused, “Alright. How many…”
“Three months.”
“Wow… that’s a- big surprise.” I smiled.
“So, when are we getting married?”
“I thought next week,”
“Bit early…”
“I just think it’s best to do it as soon as possible,”
“Can’t keep away from me huh?”
I kissed him lightly, “Next week it is then.”
