SYNOPSIS .

Anger is a silent huntress, lurking in the night, ready to strike when least expected. She hovers over you like morning fog, clouding your judgment, deceiving you at will. You see a threat; she sees a game. One moment, she's there, and the next, she's gone—leaving a trail of regret and someone else's blood on your hands. That's how most people would describe Beth McCartney, or to put it simply: a shrew. Though few dared to look her way, anyone could see she was alluring—on the outside, at least. Painted in the most vibrant colors, she seemed almost divine, as if the palette God used to create her brought Picasso himself to tears. When she smiled—a rare sight—rays of color burst from every end of the spectrum, searching for an untouched canvas to leave their mark. A simple brush of her arm could leave an unmistakable smear of chartreuse. She didn't need a paintbrush; her fingertips alone drew the colors of life. As dawn approached, she would sit on her stool, awaiting the sunrise to radiate off her and project to the world.

Then there was John Bender. Or just Bender, as most called him. People often compared him to Beth—they were both outcasts, outsiders, "criminals." But Bender didn't see himself that way; he was just misunderstood. No one ever took the time to get to know him, so who were they to judge? Troubled youth aren't trouble—they have trouble. They've experienced trouble. And they communicate their desperate need to escape it in whatever way they can. For Bender, that cry for help manifested in his vile and bitter behavior. Beneath his tough exterior, there was a prodigious courage pushing him to be brave and strong, a trait everyone could see was inherited from his father. But Bender was more fragile than he appeared, like a glass ballerina on a young girl's dresser—easily shattered. It was hard to catch his attention beneath the mop of brown hair that dominated his narrow face, but somewhere in there, eyes existed.

The two had been in Saturday detention together before. So what made this one different? What made this detention better than the others? Maybe it was because Beth had so much to admire that Saturday. Maybe it was the way she looked at him differently, or perhaps it was his raw honesty. She admired how his words spilled out slowly, as if the truth could take its time. There was a force behind them—respectful, quiet, observant, and patient. In his words, she found wonderful compassion, an awareness of the vulnerability of others, born from painful experience. It could have been many things, but the one that stood out to Beth the most? It had to be the way he looked at her throughout that Saturday. He could have been staring at that rich girl who was prettier, but he wasn't. He didn't. But why? Could he possibly feel the same way she did? That question lingered in Beth's mind all morning. She knew Bender's reputation as a player, someone who never stayed with a girl for more than a week. So, should she really let this happen and take the risk?
