Chikako 's view

I was playing my flute in the community youth band practice and had sat down in my spot oblivious to everyone around me, as they were all in high school and dating, I was the only one in Middle school. My band's conductor said that a new boy and girl were joining the band this week earlier today in my flute lesson. I wondered who it would be. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed the brass section in a uproar.

I look directly at the commotion and I see this gorgeous looking boy in a middle school uniform. I fell in love at first sight. What attracted me the most was his salmon coloured hair, sparkly brown eyes and cheeky mischievous grin. I also noticed then the girl, who really was a woman, on the tuba.

"Attention everyone " my conductor said " We have two new members with us today. Ashina Wataru on the euphonium and Tanaka Isa on the Tuba. Please make them feel welcome."

We all chimed "Welcome Asahina and Tanaka!"

I muttered "Wataru, what a nice name" under my breath and watched him clown around with the brass players. I didn't know it then, but he had only been playing a month and had progressed far enough that the band conductors (there were 3 one for woodwind, one for brass and one for percussion. The woodwind conductor conducted the most of the 3 as the other two guided their sections from the back) had begged him to come as our band was desperately short on any brass except for the trumpet. We had about 9 trumpet players, 2 French horn, and 3 trombones just prior to these two joining.

"Now let's get to work. First up today we are practising Motion," and we started practising.

After band, it was going on dark, and we were the last two left waiting. I bolstered my courage up and walked over to him, "Hello Ashina," I say shyly smiling, "I am Watanabe Chikako."

"Oh, hi!" He said, not even bothering to look at me as he was looking for the person picking him up.

"You played well for your first time," I offered again, holding my flute and music tightly to my chest as I also looked for my parents. I hoped that they hadn't forgotten me again, it was too dark to try and dangerous to try walking by ourselves. I kicked the weed in front of me.

"Thanks," he said this time glancing at me.

I felt plain and awkward, remembering how lively he was in practice and now he would not even talk to me. I noticed that he was wearing the Bright Centrair Uniform, the school I was transferring to next week. I had gotten in on a music scholarship and wondered if I would see him.

Just then my mother pulled up, I was so relieved. "See you next week, I hope you don't wait much longer." And run out to my parents beat up old car.

"Yeah, thanks." He smiled at me, finally looking at me.

I get to his car and a shiny new black car pulls up behind me and Wataru runs yelling, "Thank goodness big brother! You're here!"

"Who is that?" My mum asked "I have not seen him here before."

"Ashina Wataru, he has just joined" I say, "he plays the euphonium."

"I see," said Mum, "Are you ready for school next week?"

"Yes Mum!" I say, "I hope that it's better than my last school."

"Me too!" said Mum.

Monday morning came, and I climbed on my bike and left our small shabby home to begin the 10 minute commute by bike to school, half hour by foot.

The route I took leaves our shabby run down area into a rich upper class area and onto Bright Centrair Middle school. Bright Centrair was the best school in the area for music without having to have long commutes to the next good school for music.
