I let out a sigh, leaning back in my stool. Gene walked over, giving me a grin and resting his elbows on my drumkit. "So. What's your plan?" he asked with a smirk. "What? Plan for what?" I asked in confusion, and his grin widened. "To tell Tommy you love him! You've got twelve days, man, better figure something out quick." "Twelve days? What do you mean? Why would I only have twelve days?" "Because in twelve days he goes to his parents' home for three weeks. In the same town where his ex boyfriend lives. You know, the same ex boyfriend who still messages him all the time?"
Eyes wide, I sat upright, staring at him. "But...but he doesn't...that's his ex, right? As in, he's not gonna get back together with him!" I protested. Gene raised an eyebrow. "Is that a risk you're willing to take?" he asked. "Damn! Damn, you're right. Well then what the hell do I do?!" I cried. Gene just shrugged. "I dunno! You're the one who's in love with him." "You're useless," I moaned, burying my head in my hands.
"Oh, you trying to make Tommy fall in love with you?" Paul asked, walking into the practice room. "Well yeah, since I apparently only have twelve damn days to do it," I grumbled. "Look, all you gotta do is take him on a date and make him realize he loves you!" "A date, huh? Hmm...twelve days, twelve dates! I could do that," I said, perking up. "Yeah! I can do that! I've got twelve days, I'll take him on a date every day until he leaves and realizes he doesn't actually want to get back with his ex."
"Well, better come up with something quick, seeing as today counts as your first day," Paul said, grabbing his guitar and starting to tune it. Gene gave me a wink before walking over to Paul, picking up his bass. Frowning, I leaned against my drumkit, racking my brain as I tried to figure out a date I could ask Tommy out on without making it obvious I was asking him on a date. Before I could ask Gene and Paul for help, the door to the practice room swung open and Tommy walked in.
Like always, I felt my heart melt as he flashed me a wide smile. "Hey Eric!" he said cheerfully. "Hey Tommy!" I replied, trying not to show just how badly I was in love with him. "Oh, hey, I was wondering, after practice did you want to go to the mall with me? I gotta do some Christmas shopping and I hate doing it alone," I asked abruptly. He gave me a grin and thankfully nodded. "Yeah sure! I actually need to buy some gifts too before I head home so that works out perfectly." I nodded, stomach twisting into knots. "Right, yeah. When do you leave again?" I asked nonchalantly. "Mm, twelve days from today. So I head home on Christmas Eve."
"Oh okay, that's not bad," I said, which was of course a total lie. That was bad, that was very bad, because twelve days was barely enough time for me to convince him he loved me. Practice went by in a snap and Tommy walked over to my drumkit, giving me a soft smile. "Alright shrimp, let's hit the mall, alright?" he teased. Rolling my eyes, I set aside my drumsticks, rising to my feet. After shrugging on my jacket, I followed him out to the parking lot. "Here, I'll make it easy on both of us, we'll take my car," he said, sliding into the driver's seat as I climbed into the passenger one.
"So who're you shopping for?" he asked. "Mm, Gene and Paul and then Bruce, I already got Eric and Peter and Ace a gift." "Wow, little hurt to see that my name's not on the list," he teased. I winced, turning red. "Oh well I mean I'm gonna get you a gift, obviously, but I'm not gonna get you a gift right in front of you," I snapped. He laughed, and I nearly swooned at the sound. His laugh was just so adorable, such a sweet sound that melted my heart almost as much as his smile did. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding. And hey, don't feel too bad or anything, I still gotta get a gift for you too."
"Well, better get on that," I teased back, nudging him. Rolling his eyes, he parked the car, joining me in walking up to the front entrance of the mall. "Damn it's cold outside," he muttered, wrapping his arms around himself. Shivering, I nodded, watching my breath frost in the air. "Yeah, I know. That's what we get for living here in the winter where it likes to snow before Thanksgiving," I grumbled.
"True, true. Actually I'm really glad that you offered to take me shopping," he said, and my heart leapt. "Oh yeah? Why's that?" I asked. "I've got absolutely zero idea what to get for Paul and you've known him longer than I have." I tried not to show how disappointed by his response I was and just shrugged. "Well, just because I've known him longer doesn't mean I know what the hell to get for him. What're you getting for Gene then?" I asked. "Oh, Gene's easy! All I gotta do is find some stupid piece of Kiss merch he doesn't have yet. Which, to be fair, has been getting a bit more difficult as time goes on."
"Honestly that's not a bad idea," I mused, running a hand through my hair. "Yeah. What about Paul though?" "Hairspray," I giggled, and he rolled his eyes with a grin. "Don't tempt me with that. How about superior Eric?" "Hey! Rude!" I protested, and he laughed. "Gotta just tell the truth, sorry man. Anyway, really, what are you getting for Carr?" "Well I was smart and I asked his husband but I'm not gonna tell you what he said," I said, sticking my tongue out at him. "Shit, I gotta get a gift for Bruce too. Damn, I'm behind," he muttered. "Can't say I'm surprised. But seriously, just get Eric like something related to art or drums or cooking. Bruce...Bruce is chill, he'll take whatever! Probably a more practical gift, to be honest." "Good idea. Man, I am so glad you asked me to go with you," he said, giving me a fond smile which I happily returned.
"Well yeah, of course! I like spending time with you and I also hate shopping alone. Now seriously, we do gotta get shopping. The mall closes in 3 hours." "Right, right, good point," he said, hooking an arm through mine and dragging me down the walkway of the mall.
Three hours later, we walked back to his car, arms laden with shopping bags and my feet aching. We loaded everything into Tommy's trunk and I felt a wave of panic wash over me as I realized I had basically spent one of my twelve days barely doing anything with Tommy. "Oh hey wanna stop by my place and wrap these gifts?" I asked. He smiled but shook his head, to my dismay. "I can't tonight, I've gotta get home because my mom wants me to call her and I need to start packing, just to get it done. How about I swing by tomorrow morning?" "Sure, that works! Looking forward to it," I said, getting back in the car with him.
One day down, eleven to go.
