Mia's POV
***
"Aww, you look gorgeous!" Freya gushes, standing behind me as I look at myself in the mirror.
Today is the day I start school. Freya handed me my uniform this morning and it's not too bad. Black stockings, black skirt, white blouse, green tie and shoes of our choice.
"Are you nervous?" Freya asks, rubbing my arms up and down.
I nod. "Yeah. I haven't been to school in bloody ages"
"I'm sure you'll be fine," Freya assures me. "Headmaster Mathew already spoke to us. He's arranged a student to show you to lessons"
"Great," I sigh.
"Cmon, let's get you some breakfast," Freya smiles. "Josh hasn't seen you yet either!"
I roll my eyes but follow Freya to the kitchen. Josh is drinking coffee and reading something on his phone when Freya clears her throat, making him look up.
"Wow!" he smiles. "You look great, Mia"
"Thanks," I sigh, sitting next to him at the kitchen table. "Do I really have to go?"
Josh raises an eyebrow. "Yes. It's the law"
Freya brings me a plate of French toast drizzled in maple syrup. I thank her, take a bite, and smile. Food puts me in a good mood. Maybe today won't be so bad?

Josh parks in front of the school and turns to face me. I nibble my nails, already feeling my anxiety want to jump out of my throat.
"Mia, look at me"
I look at Josh and sigh.
"If you need anything, call Freya or me, okay? I know this is hard and scary for you, and I'm proud that you've been brave enough to try"
I nod.
"Now go have a good day"
Josh kisses my temple and unlocks the car door so I can get out. I wave until he turns the corner.
I sigh and step into the gates of this horrid school. Kids are everywhere, eating sweets, skateboarding, and chatting loudly. As I walk in, I go to the headmaster's office to meet my buddy who's supposed to be showing me around school today.
I sit on the bench outside the office and fix my skirt. I look up and feel my heart start to beat quicker when kids around my age staring at me. They look at me like I'm an exotic bird that's never been seen before.
I don't like it.
"Mia Bradley?"
I look up once more and see the headmaster smiling at me. Next to him stands a tall boy with curly hair the color of chestnut and beautiful deep brown eyes.
"I'm Alfie," the boy smiles with a small wave. "I'm your buddy"
I smile back. "I'm Mia"
"Now that you two have met each other, run along to lesson before you're late"

As my first class, I have maths.
I hate maths. I hate it with a burning passion. I'm so shit with science and anything mathematical.
Alfie and I make it to maths in time and decide to sit in the back. He shows me his notes and explains what unit we're studying. I groan when I find out its Trigonometry.
***
At lunch, Alfie introduces me to his friends and I sit with them.
***
Josh picks me up at the end of the day and smiles when he sees a smile on my face. He moves some stuff from the front seat to the back so I can sit.
"How was school today?"
I get in and shut the door. It is freezing today.
"It was great," I smile, doing up my seatbelt. "I met Alfie and he showed me around and introduced me to his friends"
"Alfie?" Josh asks, raising an eyebrow. "A boy? Oooo"
"Oh, shut up!" I laugh, shaking my head. "Not like that. He's just an acquaintance"
"Well, I'm glad you had a great day," Josh says, starting the drive home. "Freya will be pleased"
***
When we get home, Freya's baking something. Something delicious by the smell of it.
"Hey, guys!" Freya smiles, wiping her floury hands on her jeans.
"Hey, what you making?" Josh smiles, giving her a quick peck.
"I've attempted to make biscuits," Freya chuckles. "Hopefully they turn out alright"
"They smell good," I say, giving her a hug.
"How was school, my love?" she asks, cupping my face and looking down at me.
"Great, I smile. "I met some people, made some friends and didn't sit alone in the cafeteria"
"That's good," Freya laughs.

After dinner, Freya brings out the gingerbread biscuits with white chocolate chips in them. I take a bite and feel my eyes widen with how good they are.
"These are so good," I say, taking another bite.
"Mmmm," Josh replies, spraying crumbs all over the carpet. "Very good"
We decide to watch the Grinch to get us in a Christmas spirit. Halfway through the movie, I yawn and curl up at the end of the sofa, shutting my eyes. After a full day of lessons, I'm exhausted.
***
"Mia," someone whispers, shaking my shoulder. "Mia, cmon. Wake up"
"No," I groan softly, rolling over to escape the person.
"Mia, you need to go to bed"
"I'm fine here," I reply softly.
I hear Josh chuckle quietly.
"Alright, come on"
Josh puts his arms under my back and legs, lifting me effortlessly. I put my arms around his neck and rest my head on his chest.

Josh's POV
***
I lift Mia off the sofa and slowly walk to her bedroom, not wanting her to stir anymore. She wraps her arms around my neck and lays her head on my chest, breathing softly. Her eyebrows twitch and her eyelashes flutter slightly, but her eyes don't open.
I smile softly and walk into her room. Laying her down in bed, I tuck her in and switch the lamp on her bedside table off.
I press my lips to her forehead and plug her phone in so she has charge tomorrow.
"Goodnight lovey," I whisper, shutting the door behind me.
I walk back to the living room and help Freya clear up the kitchen a bit before going to bed ourselves. After adopting Mia, Freya and I haven't had much time to stream in the evenings because of how tired we are. We will pick it up in a few weeks when Mia gets more settled, but for now, she's our main priority.
