“I did it.” Mayhem’s voice was passive, hollow sounding as she stood in the doorway. She wore her gear, dirty with a few new tears in the knees, her hair unkempt in a messy bun. Anything to make herself less appealing, anything to keep him at bay. Not to mention she knew he hated when she tracked dirt on his carpet, it almost made looking at him worth it. She was looking down at her boots, and then spat on the ground next to them, knowing it would piss him off even more than her attire.
“Good work. Although you needn’t act like a barbarian, Mayhem.” Came the cool reply from the chair near the fire. Danny had developed a habit of living in upscale hotels with ornate fireplaces he was allowed to light. Mayhem figured it was for easy access to a good torture or intimidating technique during interviews, and to make himself feel classy.
Danny O’Connor might have been despicable and introduced Mayhem to darker shades of humanity most people could go through an entire life without encountering --but the man had a pension for the finer things in life, and elegant taste. Not to mention he enjoyed having the best of everything, especially when he felt like he could control it. It explained his apparent fascination with her and her skills. She would have never become as good as she was if it weren’t for him forcing every job and inhumane training technique he could think of at her.
“Might as well act like one though, considering what I do is bar-bar-ic.” She replied coldly, not moving farther into the room, although she did make eye contact. It was satisfying to see his displeasure as his eyes narrowed at her. He set down his drink and leaned forward, watching her intently.
“Now, don’t be clever, love. The last time you were smart-mouthed with me didn’t go so well, did it? And the time before that?” He stood, the crisp folds of his suit staying in place as he took a few steps towards her. Mayhem was staring at the floor again.
“And certainly the first time you talked back wasn’t so fun; you thought you were being clever back then. “I’m through, Danny!” and “I don’t need this anymore, I have a family, Danny!” Oh and, my personal favorite, “Go suck yourself off and leave me alone, Danny!”” The man imitated her voice in a high airy tone, speaking very quietly as he took a few steps closer to her.
“Well congratulations, you proved me wrong and took it all away.” Mayhem then said, head tilting to the side as she gave him a bright smile. It was frightening, the disconnect between her voice and expression, --and the looks swimming deep in her eyes. The man chuckled, reached out and put a piece of hair behind her ear, ignoring her wince. Then he turned on his heel and began walking away.
“I was going to have a special guest join us for some late dinner tonight, but since you aren’t up to dress code I guess we’ll try to reschedule.” He said over his shoulder, reaching behind a pillow of one of the couches, and pulling out a stuffed teddy bear with a purple ribbon. Mayhem almost fell over, reaching forward to grab the mantle of the fireplace to catch herself, eyes going wide.
“She’s here?” the words came out choked and very high pitched. Danny turned, giving her a wide grin with a rather malicious edge.
“Clean yourself up for dinner in twenty and maybe she’ll join us tomorrow.” He said with a sigh, tossing the bear at Mayhem and walking away into his other room.
