I woke up to a soft knock on my door. "Come in," I said in a sleepy voice.
The door opened and Justin popped his head in. "Hey sweetheart, did I wake you?"
"Yeah but it's okay. What's up dad?"
His body was now fully in my room and he walked over to my bed and sat down next to me. "Uh," he said nervously.
"Is everything okay dad?" I asked in a worried voice.
"I don't know how to tell you this."
"Just tell me."
"Um I just got a call a few minutes ago from the state prison. They called to tell us that your parents are getting out," he looked at me with a sympathetic look as he said this.
I felt my heart drop. I couldn't believe that they were getting out. "They're actually letting them out? Why would they ever let them out?"
"I don't know."
I started panicking. I was worried they would try to come after me again. "What if they come looking for me again? What if they try hurting me again? What if it's worse this time? What if-"
"Hey," Justin cut me off. "They aren't going to do anything to you. I won't let them get close to you. You're safe baby, I promise. Nothing is going to happen to you."
"You promise?" I asked in a timid voice.
"I promise you baby. I'll get you more security and I won't leave your side. I'll do anything to keep you safe. I'll do anything to make you feel safe."
"Okay."
"Are you still up for today?"
"Yeah I have to be. It's Jack's birthday and I planned this surprise party for months."
"Okay, because it's okay if you don't want to do today. I know Jack will understand."
"No, dad I don't want Jack to know. I don't want to ruin his birthday."
He looked at me with an unsure face. "Mack, you can't hide something like this from him."
"It's just for today. After his birthday, I'll tell him I promise. I just don't want him to worry on his birthday."
"Okay," he said but he looked hesitant. I know he wanted me to tell Jack but I didn't want to ruin his birthday. I didn't want Jack to worry about anything. "So you're gonna start getting ready right now? The boys are coming over in a bit so we can take Jack out for breakfast."
"Yeah, I'm gonna start getting ready right now."
He nodded, "okay, I'll be downstairs."
He left the room and I walked over to my closet to pick out my outfit for breakfast. Once I picked out my outfit, I got in the shower. After I got out of the shower, I did the rest of my daily routine.
The only thing I could think about was how they were going to let my parents out of prison. Why would they ever let them out? Don't they know they almost killed me?
My thoughts were interrupted by a knock on my door. The door opened and Jack walked into my room.
I smiled widely at him before I walked over to him and wrapped my hands around his neck. He put his hands on my waist and pulled me closer to him.
"Happy birthday baby."
"Thank you my love," he said smiling down at me (because this boy was like 6'2 while I was 5'2).
"Are you ready to get breakfast with everyone?" I asked.
"Yeah are you?"
"Almost. I just have to put my heels on, so I'll meet you down there."
