"Read books Caddy." Rita told me as she flipped an encyclopedia while lying down the sofa.
"Uh, I already am?" I brought my book up for her to see.
"Yeah, but you only read adventure or history books. Aren't you bored reading only those two?"
"You dare mock adventure and history? Such blasphemy!" I jokingly yelled at her while clutching my precious book protectively. Then as if on cue, a haughty high-pitched voice reverberated throughout the house.
"OH HO HO HO HO HO HO HO HO."
I looked at the lines of the cheesy adventure fantasy story I was reading.
'The fuck?'
"It was exactly how I pictured those characters would sound. Curious, Rita and I peeked inside the room where the voice came from. What we saw was the most stuck-up nine-year-old boy we've seen in our entire life."
The boy dusted off his hands from his recent inspection. "So you mere plebiscite is stating, that this dilapidated and horrendous place which barely resembles a home, is to be my permanent residence? Surely you jest. Clearly This Lordship deserves a far more suitable one!"
"Yup!" Mrs. Jones happily said.
The boy froze. After peering over the dingy old walls once more, he cleared his throat. "Nevermind. Compared to the barbaric house of that supposed father of mine, this is much more manageable! After all, as long as I am here, surely this building would spruce up even better than it has ever been before!"
"You there!" He pointed towards us. "Unsightly humans still in development! You shall enact the change I see fit in this drastic household. Do you hear me?"
Rita and I were speechless. We've never felt so offended in our life.
"I said, do you hear me?!" He shouted much louder with his hands on his hips for us to hear.
My lips twitched. "Uh, how about fuck n--?!"
I didn't get to finish my sentence as Mrs. Jones had already dragged us both to another room. She pleaded with us.
"Please." She clasped her hands in front of us. "I'm begging you Rita and Caddy. Mykel doesn't know any better. He came from an abusive household which made him develop delusions of grandeur for as long as anyone could remember. No one would take him because of it. That's why I'm asking you to please understand and go along with him for a while. That is, until I can finally get him a therapist. Please? I can only rely on you two since unlike Yumi, you're old enough to understand."
I grumbled. "If he's this troublesome, why bring him here?"
Rita narrowed her eyes at me. I averted her gaze.
"Don't worry mom. We'll take care of him," assures Rita.
"Hey! Says who that I agr--" Rita covered my mouth.
Mrs. Jones sighed in relief. "I knew I can count on you two."
I slumped over my wooden chair. "Life was living hell after that."
"What sort of poor fare is this?!" Hot oatmeal was splashed all over my face. "Are you truly expecting me to eat this hogwash?"
I gritted my teeth after I wiped the food away from my face. 'Keep it together Caddy. He's just a kid.'
"Rita can I smack him?" I asked Rita. She said no.
Unknowingly to my side, Yumi viciously stared at Mykel without even blinking once.
