"Ow-" Kotaro hissed, stepping on a train as he tread through the dark room wearily. Through the dark, he blindly reached into the crib, scooping up the child to calm the source of the crying.
"Aw, did you have a nightmare?" he murmured fondly, holding his son close to him, standing next to the boy's bed. The baby whimpered as if to answer him, his dark eyes now wide open. Great. "It's bedtime, ya know. Little guys should be asleep by now."
Kotaro, at this moment, was at a loss. How are you even supposed to get babies to go back to sleep? He would feel bad for waking up Keiji, who usually handled things like this despite his general disdain for children.
As usual, Kotaro pretended to know what he was doing and did the first thing he could think of: feed him. He quietly snuck downstairs, baby in his arms, and warmed up a bottle, the child sitting on the counter patiently. Kotaro stood in the kitchen, tapping his finger against the counter as he waited, before remembering that leaving a small infant alone on a high surface isn't safe and frantically (but quietly) getting him down.
After only drinking a bit, the boy refused any more from the bottle, pushing it away and proving he wasn't actually hungry. After just his first attempt, Kotaro was becoming frustrated.
He went back upstairs, slipping back into his shared room and sitting the baby down in bed next to him. "You can sleep here, okay? Just- no more crying, please," Kotaro whispered to the baby, laying down and tucking him in.
Almost immediately, the baby began to crawl around in their bed, not yet ready to go to sleep. Kotaro, rather exhausted, reached out to grab him but was stopped by Keiji, who got to the child first.
"Why are you still up, little one?" Keiji whispered lovingly, cradling his son carefully. "It's late."
Kotaro froze at the site of his lover now awake, but, after staring for a bit, decided he might as well go to the man for comfort.
"Keijiii-" Kotaro whined, placing his head in the crook of Keiji's neck. "I tried to feed him and he wouldn't sleep and I'm tired."
Keiji grinned softly, finding a way to run his fingers through Kotaro's hair. "I know," he sighed.
"Can you sing for us? Please?"
Keiji's expression immediately dropped. Not only was he not in the mood for singing, but he didn't like to sing for other people. But, as always, he gave in quickly.
"Down in the willow garden,
Where me and my love did meet,
As we sat a-courting,
My love fell off to asleep.
I had a bottle of burgundy wine,
My love, she did not know.
So I poisoned that dear little girl,
Down on the banks below.""This song is sad," Kotaro mumbled, already half asleep. Keiji rolled his eyes, ignoring his husband's complaints and continuing. He skipped the second verse, only for the sake of finishing the song soon.
"My father sits at his cabin door,
Wiping his tear-dimmed eyes.
For his only son soon shall walk,
To yonder scaffold high.
My race is run, beneath the sun,
The scaffold now waits for me.
For I did murder that dear little girl,
Whose name was Rose Connolly."Keiji looked down to see the baby now asleep, and Kotaro had laid back down, stretched across the mattress, fast asleep as well. "Finally," Keiji muttered, laying down with the two and eventually drifting off to sleep.
