happy birthday, paula !

Sonya stood outside Paula's door, holding a wrapped gift box full of chocolates, with a little dash of something extra. What for? Paula's birthday, of course. It was today, December 9th, one of the coldest days of the month. Neither of them were going to go outside in the snow though, it was too much of a hassle.
Knocking on her room door, Sonya waited for her to open it. She figured it would be a short wait, so she decided to scan her nearby surroundings. They were currently residing in the Ratri Clan mansion, alongside with their Goldy Pond peers and other friends. Even though they were adults who could live on their own, the Ratris thought it too early for them to freely roam. Upon this agreement, the older cattle agreed to stay until Emma was found.
And from where Sonya was standing, Emma was still nowhere to be found - at least, not yet.
The door opened ajar, revealing a dark-haired girl looking curiously at the one before her. "Sonya?"
Sonya flinched, caught by surprise at the sudden name call, and the way she got looked at. "P-Paula!" She said with a blushing smiley face, holding out her gift. "Um, happy birthday!"
"Oh, thank you." Paula smiled sweetly beneath her mask before taking the present from Sonya's grasp. "What's this?"
"Open and see!" Sonya grinned.
Paula opened the wrapped gift box to find her favorite food of all time. "Chocolate!" She excitedly told herself, instantly dashing back in her room and closing the door. "Thank you so much!"
Sonya laughed awkwardly and respectful, then frowned. Well, that reaction was to be expected. Besides, Paula always ate alone most days. Why did she ever expect an invite to join her for a private birthday party? Not Sonya, that's for sure. Except, she did.
Turning around to walk back to her room, she was immediately stopped by the sound of her crush's voice.
"Do you... want to maybe... join me?"
Sonya stumbled back. She wasn't expecting that question.
"What..? I mean, of course!"
The door opened wider, allowing entry for Sonya. She took a step inside the plain, small room, noticing only bedroom necessities. As per agreement of the older cattle, they also had to not make themselves fully comfortable in the mansion. That's what they did, unfortunately, Sonya included.
"Nice room." Sonya truthfully complimented, despite the fact she's seen this room plenty of times before. Sitting next to Paula, in between them was the opened box of heart chocolates. Still blushing, she turned away but quickly glanced back to look at Paula. There she was, eating chocolate by taking bites underneath her mask, pulling it slightly off her face (but far enough for her mouth not to be seen).
Paula's mask was always a wonder to the blue-haired girl. It was worn all the time, pretty stylish, and mysterious too. One day the truth will be known to why she does wear it, and they both kept to that promise.
Sonya's heart thumped at the sight of her, unknowingly putting her hand alongside Paula's in the gift box. When she realized, she slowly retracted it back. "Uh, sorry!"
Paula took notice and tilted her head confusingly. "It's okay, you know? You can have my chocolates too."
"Ah... it's not the chocolates..." Sonya trailed off on her words, averting her gaze.
"Then... what's bothering you?" Paula leaned in closer, pushing the chocolate box aside.
Scooting closer, Sonya sighed and rested her head on Paula's shoulder. "It's just... I have an extra gift for you."
Picking up her head a little, she pressed her lips against her mask, not wanting to pull it down out of consent. To her surprise, Paula kissed back. Without the removal of her mask, their kiss was briefly short, but lovely.
They pulled back to gaze in each other's eyes. Paula covered her mask with her hands, her cheeks going red at what just happened. Sonya only smiled, giving her a kiss on the forehead. "I like you."
"You... do?" Paula asked in disbelief, still taking in the romantic affection given to her.
"Positive!" Sonya told her, making a heart symbol with her hands.
Paula felt joyful tears welled up in her eyes, before enveloping Sonya in a tight hug. "I like you too."
Sonya smiled lovingly back in their blissful moment. They liked each other, the two girls who were finally together. Deeply in love.
"Happy birthday, Paula."
