Chap 1: Lovers Instead (ushijima x reader)

Note: My inspo is from a tiktok trend. This chapter is friends to lovers, a little bit of slow burn, and kinda smut towards the end (but barely). Have fun!

Ushijima and you were calmly sitting in his dorm on the floor, studying as you usually did on weekdays like this. You and Ushijima had a steady routine as study buddies and it was safe to say that you two had become notably close over the years that you were friends. You had first met him in the start of your 1st year, you had transferred from a different city in japan for your dad's job and you weren't familiar with the setting. You ended up getting lost and happened to bump into a stranger who then took you in for the night and would later become one of your best friends at your new school. Ushijima Wakatoshi, all star ace, and the blunt, oblivious, stone of a boy you had liked since you met him. You had been too shy to confess, uncertain if your feelings would be reciprocated. You were pretty sure that you were in the friendzone, even after attending all of his games, going grocery shopping with him and cooking while he took showers, and even after spending your nights with him to study for exams. You then entered your 3rd year now and it was almost unbearable to watch the other girls at your school fawn over him and blow you off as the 'best friend' or 'the girl next door'. At one point, someone asked you to be their wingman for them in order to go on a date with Ushijima. Although their words and actions stung your feelings, deep down you knew that they were right. You had spent so much time with Ushijima over the past years that if you two were fated to enter a relationship, it would've already happened.

You internally sighed and glanced over at Ushijima who was oblivious to your turmoil, intently focused on his homework from the day. You were on break and decided to distract yourself from the pitiful thoughts. You opened tiktok and a small smile sat on your lips. Your videos had received a couple hundred likes and several encouraging comments and questions. Although you had started tiktok as a joke, your following picked up and people at your school had started to notice. You started posting a daily video, talking about your day or fun questionnaires, but the things that got the most likes were your videos ranting about your romantic life. You hadn't said Ushijima's name since he followed you and you would die if he avoided you after you confessed through tiktok. You'd be a laughingstock of the school.

As you scrolled through your bookmarked songs, thinking of ideas for a new video for later that night, you clicked a song, and your heart skipped a beat. "I wanna ruin our friendship... we should be lovers instead... I don't know how to say this... cuz you're really my dearest friend..." The lyrics filled your ears and you flipped through some of the couple's videos. You watched the experimental kisses exchanged and your imagination replaced the couple with you and Ushijima. Your cheeks were dusted pink at the thought of Ushijima's soft lips on yours, the faint taste of his mint gum filling your senses, his hands wrapping gently around your waist as he pulled you in for more-.

You stopped yourself in your tracks and remembered that you were deeply rooted int the friendzone. If you attempted this, 3 things could happen. You end up trying and get rejected and he never talks to you again, you end up trying and he rejects you and you stay awkwardly as friends, or you end up trying and you both get together. The odds are really low and I don't want to lose him... you thought to yourself, agonizing over what to do. If not now, then when? How long are you willing to put this off? If you don't do it, someone else will and it'll all be for nothing... Are you ok with that? Your eyes glanced over at Ushijima once more and saw that he was still hard at work. You gulped harshly and internally hyped yourself up for this. Your friendship is strong enough to get past the awkwardness if this fails. It'll be ok.

You nonchalantly set up your phone with the audio to face Ushijima who was seemingly unaware. You made your way next to him before pulling on his sleeve playfully. You hit record as he turned to you and the audio began to play. his gaze briefly traveled to your phone and then back to you in utter confusion. You smiled softly before mouthing the phrases to the song, making sure not to break eye contact. "I wanna ruin our friendship..." you mouthed and you saw a slightly sad look pass across his face and you felt his arm tense up in your grip. You continued on despite your desire to turn the video off and pretend that this never happened. "We should be lovers instead..." you mouthed, leaning in much closer this time. A few inches separated his face from yours and you saw something you hadn't seen before flicker in his eyes.
