Hartley's POV:
My alarm wakes me up at 6am. I reach to shut it off before I realize what today is. The day I meet my brother. Biological brother. I've known I had one my whole life, but I've never met him before. I guess I should explain. My name is Hartley Montgomery. I'm 16, and I've been in the foster care system my whole life. I've had lots of foster parents, most of them weren't that great, but the ones I have now are pretty good. Margaret and Andrew Taylor. They're the first foster parents I've had who've given me the opportunity to meet my brother. Andrew actually called him for me. He's a firefighter at Station 19, which is a few minutes from my house, so they're dropping me off there at 7 to meet with him. 40 minutes later Andrew is rushing me to finish getting dressed so we can leave.
Andrew: Hartley, come on, pick an outfit, honey! We need to go or we're gonna be late.
Hartley: How's this? Is it good enough? Will he like it?
I'm wearing a yellow sweater with dark blue jeans and my dirty white converse. I've had them since I was 13, so they're really worn out and they have holes on the sides. But foster kids don't get new shoes often, and they're the only ones I have, and I like them. I just hope Travis doesn't judge me for them.
Andrew: Hartley. Hartley. Hey, we've been in the car for 10 minutes and you haven't said a word. Are you okay?
Hartley: What if he doesn't like me? What if he doesn't want me? What if he tells me to leave and never contact him again?
Andrew: I don't think he would do that. When I called him to set up the meeting, he was so excited to meet you. Kid, I've never heard anyone that excited. It'll be fine. I promise.
Hartley: Okay.
Andrew: We're here. I'll come pick you up in a couple hours, but text me if you need to change the time. Good luck, kiddo.
Hartley: Bye.
I grab my phone and walk towards the front door. I take a deep breath before I go in and find the front desk. My hands are shaking so I clasp them together so tight they lose color, but it makes me feel better. I walk up to the firefighter at the front desk, a lady with dark hair. Her name tag says "Hughes".
Vic: Hi, can I help you?
Hartley: Hi, I-I'm looking for Travis Montgomery. I'm supposed to meet him here today.
Vic: Of course, I'll go grab him for you. What's your name?
Hartley: Hartley.
She stops right before she reaches the stairs. When she turns around I notice she is smiling, but her eyes look glassy.
Vic: I'm Vic. It's really nice to meet you.
Hartley: You too.
Vic: I'll go get Travis.
Vic's POV:
I was on desk duty for the day, which I didn't mind because I knew Travis was meeting his sister for the first time today at the station. Around 7 a young girl walks in and asks for Travis. As soon as she told me her name I knew it was her. She had Travis' eyes. I had to stop myself from tearing up when I saw her, so I ran up the stairs to the beanery to find him.
Vic: Travis! Trav!
When I get to the beanery I find Maya, Jack, Dean and Travis eating breakfast. They all stop immediately when I come running in.
Dean: Whoa, Hughes. What's wrong?
Vic: Shh! None of your business! Travis! Come downstairs right now!
Travis: I'm eating.
Vic: Hartley. Downstairs. Now.
Travis' face noticeably changes.
Jack: Who's Hartley?
Travis: Tell you later. Bye!
He runs towards the stairs. I'm happy for him because I know how excited he is to meet her. I follow him but the rest of the team doesn't come with.
Vic: Well come on!
We run after Travis. I can't wait to see this.
Travis' POV:
Vic comes running into the beanery and tells me Hartley is downstairs. I'm really excited to meet her, but I'm nervous she might hate me for not fighting harder to keep her in the family. I haven't forgiven myself for it, and now that I can, I'm gonna do whatever I can to get her back. I walk into the front of the station, and I see her playing with her hands the same way I do.
Travis: Hartley?
Hartley(turning around): T-Travis?
