When we arrived, we were greeted by a woman who escorted us inside. "Please follow me." We were lead into a courtyard and there I saw a woman sitting on a chair drinking tea. "You must be M/n. I'm Xie Huiqing." She looked over to me and stood up. "It is an honour to finally meet you." I bowed and tried to put on a smile. "Dinner is almost ready, follow me." We followed her into a large room with a table filled with food. She gestured to us and we sat down. Xie looked around and frowned. "Where's my son. He should've been here by now. Someone please go get him." One of the woman standing in the room quickly bowed and left the moment Xie finished speaking.
Xie sat down and sighed. "Sorry, my son's habit of tardiness always gets him in trouble." "No worries, my daughter is like that as well." My mother said smiling at me. I rolled my eyes and looked away. Soon after, one of the doors opened and I saw the woman from earlier enter the room with. "LIANG?!" I shot up from my seat and shouted. He looked at me with surprise and smiled awkwardly. "W-we meet again." He chuckled and looked away. "I see you've met my son. M/n this is Liang, my youngest." Liang bowed. "It is an honour to meet you Mrs.L/n" "Likewise." He sat down and glanced at me. I quickly turned my head.
Our parents chatted a lot. Mainly about plans for the future. I kept my head down, only speaking when necessary. Mid conversation, Liang stood up and left. His mother called after him but he ignored. I sighed. "Uh, Mrs.Xie, do you mind if I use the washroom?" She nodded and told me where to go. I quickly left the room and followed after Liang.
I closed the door behind me and saw him walking around the courtyard. He knelt down and stared at some fish swimming around in the pond. "They seem to like you." Liang shook his head. "They always swim away when anyone gets close expect for me. I like to feed them when I get the chance, but my mother always has something keeping me busy. He smiled sadly. "Y/n, I'm sorry. I...don't want to hurt your feelings by saying this but." He looked away. "I don't think this, us, is going to work. We barely know each other. A marriage like this will never work out." I felt huge relief. He gets it. Something like this will never work out. "I'm glad we can agree on something." I said. His eyes widened at me. "W-wait you aren't angry at m-me?" He stuttered out. I nodded. "I never wanted this in the first place." He sighed. "I know our parents won't agree with us. I'll try convincing my mother to agree with us. It might take a while though..." We both looked away. I didn't want to be forced to marry a stranger, all for money. That meant nothing to me. "Well if can't convince them then I guess we'll have to get friendly with each other." I frowned. He giggled. "I'm not that bad am I?" "I guess you're ok." "Just ok?!" We both laughed. He was a good person but I wasn't the one for him. He deserved someone better. We both did.
We both returned inside and sat down. My mother eyed us suspiciously. "You two were gone for a while. Did something happen?" I shook my head. "We just had a talk." I glanced at Liang. "Well I hope you two get along."
When it was time to leave, we all said our goodbyes. Before we left, Liang ran up to me and whispered. "Just give me some time. Hopefully luck is on our side." And we parted. "What did he say to you?" My father asked. I didn't say anything as we walked home.
