The Glade

The screeching sound of metal against metal throbbed in her ears and what little light there was in wherever she had been filled her eyes.

She sat up from her sleeping position on the floor and frantically took in her surroundings.

It's a box. I'm in a box!

She thought. Panic bubbled inside of her and her heartbeat had risen into her throat. Dreary thoughts consumed her wholly.

I'll never get out. I'm trapped forever!

Trapped...

She breathed heavily and curled into a corner of the box she was in. The box continued to rise higher and higher at an uncomfortably fast speed. Her stomach churned and a coughing fit took over. Then, the box stopped.

She fell onto the floor and tried to steady her breathing. All she knew was her name:

Emmy... it repeated itself over and over. flashes of snow on a winters morning and leaves rustling through a forest came and went in her mind. They all seemed to be memories--but of what; she had no clue. No other names or faces of other people were recalled. She had no idea how or when she had gotten in the little box and it frustrated her to only know what seemed to be half of a life.

Emmy would have called for help if she had complete control over her body, but try as she might, she couldn't find the strength to speak.

Stuck... she thought.

A few mintes passed by with nothing having happened. Emmy forced herself to stand, gathering all of her strength, and slammed her body into the metal wall. It swayed and she fell to the floor by the strange wavy feel. Again she tried ramming into the sides of the box, but it was no use. She was trapped in the box with no light and no sounds but her own shaky breathing.

After several more minutes had passed, the familiar screeching sound of metal was heard again and she looked up to see a sliver of light make its way through the oepening ceiling. Emmy watched as it completely opened and the shocking brightness of daylight blinded her, forcing her to shield her eyes. When her eyes had adjusted, she was able to make out the shilouettes of several young men. All of them stared straight at her with wide eyes and some murmered to one another,

"It's a bloody girl."

"Maybe it's a guy that just looks like a girl?"

"Why'd they send a girl?"

Each of their statements had ended in the word 'girl' as if they singled Emmy out immediately.

I'm the only girl, She thought, figuring out why they had such reactions.

A rope was then tossed down to her and she hesitated to grab it.

"Grab it, shuck-face." One of the boys commanded.

Shuck-face? Emmy thought to herself, marveling over their strange language.

"Either you grab the rope or you'll die, greenie." He finished.

Greenie?

Emmy grabbed the rope and was hauled up in a rush by the boys. Hands grabbed her shirt to help--some grabbed other things and recoiled immediately.

"Definitely a girl!" They would exclaim.

She fell onto the grass floor and just lay there, so perplexed by whatever was going on.
