Last Christmas

Christmas wasn't exactly Lucas' favourite time of year.

Not after what happened last year.

Now, here he was, sat on the doorstep of his house in the freezing cold, snow falling to the ground, growing deeper by the second. He rolled his eyes as he watched a group of carol singers make their way past the end of the street. He listened as a mishmash of Christmas music was heard faintly from numerous houses around him. The smell of fresh cookies drifted from the kitchen next door.

His head fell into his hands as everything flooded back. How last year had left such a mark on his heart. Falling head over heels for someone, giving them your whole heart, only for them to stomp it on the floor. That type of shit hurts. He would know.

As Christmas approached, even the smallest things that reminded him of the previous year made everything fall apart. He had spent a good portion of the holiday season hiding inside, avoiding all the joy of everyone. He only went shopping for the basic necessities.

He missed the feeling he used to associate with the season, but after everything, it wasn't exactly hard to understand why.

The boy's name was Jungwoo.

Pure and innocent at heart, Lucas never even considered the way he could hurt him so brutally. He had fallen head over heels for the boy. He gave him his all. And at the start, Jungwoo just smiled, accepting the affection. Lucas did so many many things to try and get his attention, to try and earn his affection in return. As Christmas came, Jungwoo started to reply, giving him flowers and light pecks on the cheeks. Lucas fell even harder.

But then, when going for a walk with his little sister, he noticed the older boy kissing someone on the pier. In that moment, his heart shattered as he watched the older boy kissing a younger girl, their hands all over each other. The image of the moment his heart broke repeating constantly as the festive season approached, every time he saw the pair of them together at school. It was like he had stabbed him straight through the chest. Lucas couldn't even begin to compare it to any other pain. Pain like this didn't go away easily.

Lucas looked up from the pile of muddy snow when he noticed a shadow formed by the linking Christmas lights across the street.

"Hey, are you ready to go?" a small voice asked. Lucas noticed the familiar face in front of him. It was Winwin, a boy from his dance class. He had just transferred to Lucas' school and the pair happened to share a few classes.

Winwin had first approached him in dance class, asking if the older could help him with some of the choreo. That was about a month ago. They had only recently started talking outside of school as well as Winwin had noticed the younger boy looking a little upset as the Christmas season approached. Though he was currently unaware of why, he was doing his best to make the older feel better.

The pair walked down the snow-covered street as Winwin kept pointing out all the cool Christmas decorations that people had put up. They made their way to the school where Winwin was dragging Lucas to the Christmas Carnival. It had taken a lot of encouragement but eventually, the younger gave in, unable to resist the pouts Winwin had given him as they left dance practice the previous day.

A mile away, the two could hear the blaring music coming from the school, mixed with the cries of laughter as students enjoyed the rides and festivities. Lucas watched as a smile suddenly dawned the older boys face as he took his hand, dragging him into the fun.

They spent a while exploring what there was to do before actually deciding what to do. They decided to go on some of the rides before heading to the carnival booth where Winwin insisted on Lucas winning him a giant duck plushie. Lucan couldn't help but feel butterflies when he watched how excited Winwin got as Lucas knocked the tower of cans down and got handed the giant teddy.

For the rest of the evening, the two mostly talked, grabbing some nosh and hot chocolates to keep warm and energized as the snow continued. Lucas hauled the massive plushie as the older boy held his hand, stating that Lucas' hands were 'so big they were like blankets for his own, protecting them from the cold'.

As the evening drew to an end, the two walked back to Winwin's place since Lucas insisted on carrying the plushie home for him. They trudged through the snow, hands still wrapped around each others, only now the opposite side. It wasn't until there was nobody around that Winwin finally spoke his mind.

"Why are you always so sad? I like your smile, it's pretty" Winwin exclaimed.

"What do you mean?" Lucas asked, knowing full well what the older boy was implying but hoping to brush it off.

"I mean- you always seem to have something on your mind. Or- is it, someone. You seemed happy and chill when we first met. As Christmas got closer you always looked so caught up in your thoughts" Winwin explained, slowly realising quite how invasive it might sound despite the time they had spent together. Were they really at the point of sharing secrets yet?

"I guess- It's just- this time last year wasn't exactly the best Christmas and that pain hasn't really faded yet." Lucas sighed, eyes watching where his feet stepped into the snow.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Does it have something to do with Jungwoo?" Winwin asked. He had noticed the way the younger would just sort of stare at him sometimes.

"I- uh- Yeah. How did you know?" Lucas asked, giving in to the questions, something about the older boy and the way he looked at him made him feel as though he could spew his whole life story right there and then.

"When we first met, your eyes would always follow him if we walked past him in the corridor. Did you see him at the carnival today?" Winwin asked, curious about how the older would answer.

"No, I didn't expect to though. It's not really his thing" Lucas sighed, remembering asking the boy last year.

"Well, I did. He was sat by the Eggnogg stand we walked past at least three times. I think its safe to say, you are definitely in the process of moving on" Winwin smiled, resting his head against the taller boy's arm.

Lucas thought for a moment. Jungwoo was there, and he didn't even acknowledge that until it was pointed out. He hadn't been focused on the baine of his holidays. Instead, his only focus was the boy who walked alongside him, their fingers laced as he walked him home.

Five more minutes of walking in silence as the older of the two spoke up to break it.

"I had a lot of fun this evening, thank you for coming with me" Winwin smiled, helping Lucas get the duck plushie off of his back where he had been giving it a piggyback.

"I had fun as well. Thank you for dragging me to the carnival. If you hadn't i would have been moping at home. So thanks" Lucas laughed in return, reluctant to let go of the boy's hand that he still held in his own.

"Well, you had better head home before it gets too cold. Message me when you are home yeah" Winwin stated, tugging his hand free from the younger boys. He tiptoed to peck his cheek before quickly running inside the house, waving briefly from just inside the door before pulling it shut.

Lucas stood dumbfounded, his hand against his cheek where the older had pecked it. He could feel the blush rising as the butterflies came back. He walked the whole way home with a smile. Maybe he really was moving on from Jungwoo. And now he had figured out why, or even, who.
