"A road trip?" Amelia peered skeptically into the vehicle—fully packed with suitcases and snacks and bags. "Weird choice for a first date."
Derek swung the last of the luggage into the backseat and shut the door. "Trust me. You'll love it."
"Mhmm," she hummed. "Where'd you get this car anyway?"
He thumped the side. "Matt let me borrow it. Mine is a little cramped for trips." He checked his watch. "We better get on the road if we want to miss rush hour."
Amelia looked over the vehicle again. "Don't you have to work?"
Derek stepped up next to her and took her hands. "Amelia. Stop worrying, I've got it covered. Unless you don't want to go?" His eyebrows crinkled. "I'm sorry—maybe this was a bad idea—"
"No, it's fine," she reassured him, squeezing his hands. "I was just a bit caught off guard."
He smiled and gave her forehead a quick kiss. "Alright, hop in then."
"Actually," Amelia said, "let me pee real quick." Speed walking through the building, Amelia soon found herself alone in the apartment. She used the restroom, taking a second to clean herself up a little as she swiped at the leftover mascara that caked her lower lashes.  As she washed her hands, nausea stirred in her belly.
Please, no. The last thing she needed was to add nausea to her typical carsickness. Her lips pressed together as she remembered the likely cause of her nausea. Her hand slipped down to her belly.
Her shoulders hunched, cramping with how tightly she clenched them. Forcing her eyes wide, Amelia dug her nails into her palms and took deep breaths to force the thought from her mind.
A bead of red fell on the sink. Her eyes caught on the droplet, quivering slightly as it reflected the light. After several long moments, she grabbed a square of toilet paper and wiped it away.
Amelia splashed cold water on her face and headed out the door. The air seemed chillier than before as she stepped outside, hurrying to the car and warmth.
She slid into her seat, shivering slightly.
"You okay?" Derek asked as he took the drivers seat.
Amelia nodded. "Just a little chilly."
He reached for her hands as though to warm them up. A split second panic as she decided what to do, and she thrust just the left one into his hands. She hadn't broken skin on that side.
He massaged the skin and muscle, restarting circulation and sending shivers up her arm and down her back. Derek pressed a kiss to the pad of each finger before releasing her.
"Want me to get the other one?"
"No," she said quickly, "thank you."
He smiled, turning the key in the ignition. They pulled out, and the movement of the car made her drowsy. Sleep would alleviate the symptoms of her upset stomach too, so she decided to try for a nap. Amelia leaned her head against the window and dozed to the sound of passed cars.
Yes, it's short 🤷♀️. I know where this scene is going so if you bug me over the week I might put out an early update, like a part 2, (otherwise I'll procrastinate and forget lol.) Hope you guys are still enjoying the story and not just too invested to stop now 😂
Ik it's been a bit slow as I wrap up all the storylines—I just want to make sure that I don't leave any loose threads.
Let me know if there's something you want to see before I finish the book!

His hands stilled, and her eyes popped open. "Yes, sir...
