Werewolf Nature
What happens next happens so fast I barely even register what's going on. Vince charges at us, shifting straight into his wolf. He's a huge grey wolf, short and low to the ground. But he's fast. Ryan tenses in front of me, bracing himself by leaning forward. His arms pull backwards slightly, blocking me behind him completely. He howls just as Vince crosses the distance in front of us.
Vince's paws shove into the ground a yard away from us and he pushes up, jumping towards us. Ryan presses against me and throws his leg out, landing a kick to the side of Vince's face. But he keeps coming, instead of biting Ryan in the face he bites him on the arm. I howl loud as I hear Ryan scream, watching as Vince's teeth dig into his arm.
I'm not scared, frozen to the spot anymore. This piece of shit just hurt my only friend so far, and he's not going to get away easy.
Before I can even think my shoulders cave in and my wolf rips free. She's even more furious than I am, and her red hot anger blinds me. Flashes of red cover my vision as I charge at Vince, gripping him by the neck. Growling I yank him away from Ryan and sink my teeth farther into his neck before tossing him across the open space around us and into the closest tree. Ryan falls forward and against my pitch black fur, his hand gripping into it. I feel his shoulder digging into my back.
"Thanks for the help, pup." Ryan mumbles out, all the sarcasm from before gone. My wolf whines when we hear the pain in his voice. His hand that isn't on his hurt arm pats my fur. "It's okay, I'm fine." He's lying through his teeth.
Vince gets up from across the forest from us, and there's no way I'm ever letting that douche bag move again. I will break all four of his legs if I have too; he's not getting away with causing my friend pain. I shake Ryan off gently before charging at Vince, completely catching him off guard. He takes a small step back, and that's all i need to have him sprawled out in the dirt. My teeth rip through any patch of fur I can find, and I yelp when his teeth suddenly snap into my side. I jump back and away from him, but he's quick. He snaps for my face, and I'm just able to turn my head in time so he doesn't get my eyes. Instead he chomps down on my ear. I howl again, pain shooting through me as he yanks his head to the side. Blood gushes from my ear, and I can't hear anything on my right side for a couple seconds.
"Lyra!" Ryan's voice screams, snapping me out of it. I stop howling and hurry backwards, away from a charging Vince. I duck out of his way, and he narrowly misses me again. For being fast, his aim sure is off. But that's when I realize my mistake. He wasn't even aiming for me after all--he was aiming for Ryan. Ryan realizes it too because me moves to turn, but his body doesn't let him. If you're hurt in human form, you can't change into wolf form. It dawns on him too late, and by the time he tries to hurry off behind the tree he's leaning on it's too late. I jump to stop him, but I'm not quick enough.
Vince's teeth bite down on Ryan again, this time on his ankle. He screams, the sound breaking my heart. My wolf reacts before I have time to think though, and grabs a mouth full of Vince's tail, yanking him to face me right before my canines shred across his face. He howls in pain and takes steps backwards, but I'm too pissed to notice. I grab at the first foot of his and can reach and bite down as hard as I can, waiting for that loud crack I heard when he bit my friend. When I hear it he howls again and smacks me away from him with his bleeding face.
I fall onto a knee in front of Ryan, blocking him as Vince blindly rushes at us. Unable to catch my balance I brace myself, waiting for his teeth to sink into my matted fur again. But instead an intense growling from my right catches my attention right before it rams into Vince's side, shoving him against a tree. One of the biggest silver wolves I've ever seen roars before ripping into Vince's fur, making his grey color pale in comparison.
I know right away that's our Alpha, my mate.
My wolf yips with joy and I ache to join him in the fight. I start to rush forward, but a brown wolf cuts me off, blocking my path. Where the hell did he come from? The brown wolf growls threateningly, but not so much that I think he's going to attack me. He's warning me.
"Lyra." Ryan's voice barks behind me. My left ear flashes back and I quickly turn around, rushing to his side--the one that isn't hurt. We may not have known each other for very long, but he's the closest thing I've ever had to a friend--not including Jawn--and I can't stand him seeing him in pain. I bury my head into his side and he shakily raises a hand to pat my head. "It's Brian. He doesn't want to you interfere with Jawn and Vince. You'll only get in the way." His voice is strained, and his face has lost it's tanned color. I whimper and dig my head against his side again.
His fingers brush through my matted fur.
"Thank you, by the way." He mumbles into my left ear, his eyes watching Brian as he moves in front of us, blocking us from seeing Vince and Jawn. I trust Brian enough to know that he won't let Vince anywhere near us again. Not that Jawn would ever let him near enough to us that Brian would have to.
I whine again and fall to the ground next to him, laying my head in his lap. I look up at him and lick his hurt arm's hand.
"There's nothing you could've down about it. You didn't let me die, that's all that matters." His voice trails, and I nudge his leg with my paw to keep him awake. He smiles softly down at me, before closing his eyes. "Don't worry. Everything'll be alright now. Jawn's here." Ryan leans his head against the tree behind him, and I see his heavy breathing level out as he falls asleep. His absolute trust in Jawn is reassuring. He knows were getting out of this fine, and so do I.
Being sure to keep from moving him too much, I slowly shift up so I'm sitting next to him, his hand still buried in my fur. I look up to see Brian starring at me, a hard look on his face. He motions his head towards me right side, and I feel my head cock to the side in question. He makes a huffing sound, through his nose, then moves to scratch his right ear. Confusion rushes over me but I do the same and scratch my right ear.
Only there's nothing there to scratch.
Realization slaps me in the face when I remember Vince biting my ear. The blood must have been because it wasn't there anymore.
I stiffen before whining then falling over, my face landing in the dirt by Ryan's feet right before I lose consciousness.
