The sun has already disappeared. You've been running through the maze for half an hour already, with no sign of a griever. Or Newt.
But finally the worst thing that could happen, happens. You hear a loud clanking like a dozen metal poles hitting the ground. A robotic whirring echoes through the maze with an occasional beep. Like a machine?
Then you see Newt running around the corner with pure terror on his face, when he sees you the terror impossibly deepens. You start running towards him but he shakes his head frantically.
"RUN THAT WAY!" He yells. You hesitate, the clanking gets louder, the whirring even closer. From the corner that Newt emerged comes a huge metal leg twice the height of you. Your eyes grow wide. And Newt is next to you, dragging your arm and shouting to run.
You do just that, instead taking Newt's arm and helping him run even faster, you hear the monster behind you, but don't look back. As you turn the next corner you dive into the thick bush of Ivy at the bottom of the wall, concealing you both in the dark green plants.
The griever turns the same corner almost immediately but slows as it realises you're gone. You finally get a good look at the beast. It clicks and whirrs as it drags its slimy fat body along. Its legs huge and spider like slamming into the ground. You're amazed yet disgusted as to how it exists and grip Newt's hand under the ivy. The horrific monster is soon out of sight but you don't leave the ivy for hours, constantly alert.
"I think we're good to go Y/N." Newt murmurs, his voice is raspy and tired.
"I think so too, the walls will be open soon, we just have to make it." You respond as he squeezes your hand gently.
You pull off the leather wristband he gave you the first time you kissed and place it in his hand. You don't need to speak, he knows why you gave it to him; in case one of you got hurt.
He cups your face in his hands and you rest your forehead against his, it's then that you realise you love him, of course you do. You pray that he gets out, that he's ok, that you came into the maze for a reason.
Then you begin to slowly crawl out of the ivy, aching and covered in bruises from Gally's little group attacking you. Newt crawls out behind you, rubbing his head.
"I think I know the way back," you tell him, "Me and Minho cut those vines yesterday." You gesture to the wall with the vines cut about a foot off the ground. Newt points at the sky, the sun has begun to light up the sky's gentle blue, mixed with a intense orange.
"The sun's coming up, the doors will definitely open soon. We can make it Y/n."
You meet his eyes. "We will Newt." The two of you start to run, in constant worry of bumping into another griever.
You never get distracted, focusing all your attention into finding the right way back to the glade, to safety. But suddenly, a terrible noise rings through your ears, filling your whole body with dread. Another noise drowns it out, the doors opening, you were nearly there.
"QUICKER!" You yell again grabbing Newt's hand and pulling him along.
The daunting slow clanking becomes louder and louder, a griever right behind you. You glance back to see it reach one of its metal claws towards Newt you yank him out of the way, shoving him in front of you, he stumbles right over to the doors as the griever pins you down. Slowly the doors begin to open as you thrash at the beast, stuck beneath it.
"Y/N!" Newt yells, the Gladers come into view, Newt charges forward but Alby and Zart stop him, pulling him back into the maze.
The griever holds a metal arm on your stomach, slowly pressing harder and harder. "GET OFF HER!" Newt screams, trying to break away from three of the gladers. You yell at the pain, confused as to why the griever isn't killing you instantly.
