the weeks blurred together as karl went about his day, alone. he kept to himself, trying his hardest to not need sapnap. he even ended up getting on chris's good side at school to the point where he wasn't getting picked on. all because he said that he didn't have an imaginary friend anymore.

deep down though, he really did miss sapnap and wanted him back. the dude couldn't have just disappeared into thin air, right?

all karl knew is that he wanted his best friend back.

the morning came and went as karl got up, his hopes up high to see nick sitting next to his bed, waiting for him. when the boy looked over to see he spot empty as he got out of bed, a frown prominent on his face. he shouldn't still be hoping that he would be there. the spot had been empty for the past month.

"karl!" a feminine voice called from downstairs, causing the boy to hurry up and go downstairs. his mother was by the door with his siblings, who were dressed to go out.

"yeah mom?" karl asked, stopping on the bottom as he looked at her. he tilted his head to the side as he noticed that they were getting ready to leave.

"we're going shopping for your sister," his mom simply stated as she adjusted her purse on her shoulder. karl felt his frown grow more but quickly hid it as he nodded.

"alright, have fun. could i go see uncle clay and george while you guys are gone?" karl asked, earning a small nod from his mom.

"of course sweetie."

karl had gotten changed into a sweater and a pair of jeans before heading out of his home. the seasons had begun to change from fall to winter as the temperatures began to drop and the leaves began to fall.

december had quickly snuck up on everyone, surprising them with the frigid temperatures that appeared. though today, it felt good to be out in the cold. perfect for cooling off a hot head.

karl had quickly jogged over to his uncles' house and up onto the huge bay porch that had been cleaned up for the winter. the chairs that were usually outside were put away in the garage and the swing was gone. the boy walked up to the door and was getting ready to knock when the door swung open.

there stood bad, who looked like he was expecting karl to come over.

"how did you know i was coming?"

"your mom texted us before you got here. perfect timing i guess," the older man shrugged as he pushed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose. he moved aside to let the boy in the warm house and out of the cold before shutting the door behind him.

"did you bring your friend?" bad asked as the two walked to the living room, which was deserted as clay and george weren't up yet.

"what friend?"

"sapnap of course! you told me that you guys were best friends," the older commented as he sat down on the couch.

"i'm not a little kid anymore," karl started off, trying to be tough around one of his uncles, "but i really do miss him. i haven't seen him in the past month, no matter where i look."

there it was.

karl's truth.

"do you really mean that?" another voice called out.

karl looked up at bad, thinking that his voice got a bit deeper for a moment. the man stared innocently back at him with a shrug.

"did you hear that?"

"hear what?"

"that voice. was that not you who was speaking?" karl asked, confused as he looked around to see if they were playing a prank on him.

"you know nick, it's not nice to eavesdrop."
