THE KICK is an idiotic tradition that has been going on since I stepped into this school. Every academic year one of the popular boys in the senior year [mostly the jerks] randomly kicks a ball on the first day of school, if the ball touches you or stops at your feet, you basically become their servant which means as their servant, you have to do whatever they ask you to do.

A lot of people have reported this event as bullying to the school authority but they never acted on it because "it doesn't involve physical violence", which doesn't make sense to me.

I look around me to find who kicked the ball when I see Seth, one of the popular boys in our school leaning on the lemon tree behind me wearing a mischievous grin on his face and I suspect him immediately.

My suspicion is confirmed when I turn around to continue my trip to the dining room after sending him a glare and I hear him say "stop". I stay rooted in my spot and hear footsteps walking towards me.

"You are supposed to pick up the ball", he says from behind me in a commanding tone.

I spin around quickly to face him and ask him "are you stupid? Just convince me, are you really stupid?

He doesn't reply my question all he did is smirk and it takes everything in me to stop myself from wiping that smirk off his face with a slap across the face

"You know what you don't need to reply because from the look of things you are very stupid. Do you even know the rules of the game you play or the stupid tradition you take part in? I ask him

"No I don't, enlighten me" he mocks

I ignore his mocking tone "that is one of the reasons why you must be stupid. Now let me remind you, did you forget the ball isn't supposed to touch a girl or your classmate?"

He moves forward and begins to circle me slowly like a predator trying to joke around with its prey before devouring it "rules can be changed you know", he pauses in front of me "now pick up the ball", he commands

I look around to see if people are watching but find only a few people. "What if I refuse to pick it up", I challenge him.

He looks taken aback for a second but regains himself immediately "you don't want to mess with me", he threatens

I bring out my phone from my pockets to check the time, shit dinner would soon be over; I need to go "as much as I'd love to mess with you right now I can't because that would cost me my dinner so bye and don't forget to pick up your ball".

I turn around to head to the dining when he moves around and blocks my path sending me a deadly glare "pick the ball now" he says slowly, through gritted teeth frustration and anger evident in his voice

I am one of those people who never use people's secrets against them or threaten them with it, but right now if I really want to have dinner and get Seth off my case tonight and throughout the senior year then I have to do this.

I move close to him, reducing the space between us and my voice so the little audience wouldn't hear what I'm about to say to him. "I have two options for you and I want you to pick one; make me pick the ball and I'll tell the whole school you weren't with your grandmother at Miami this summer, all the pictures you posted on facebook are photos from last year and you were at the rehab".

"Or", I pause for a second and step back a little "let me go and do not bother any other student with this stupid tradition and your secret is safe with me."

I look at his face closely to find a shocked expression; if it wasn't dark I think I would have watched all the color drain from his face. He takes a step back and stutters "how did you find out",

Did he just stutter; almighty Seth actually stuttered

"That's for me to know and for you to never find out" a victorious smile appears on my face "If you would excuse me I have to get dinner and goodnight". I say to him and walk around him to the dining without interruption this time around.

During the summer holiday, I volunteered with an NGO that helps drugs addict and offers counseling. They hosted a few campaigns during the summer and my job was to organise the little goody bags they gave to the addicts during visits to rehabs and that was how I saw Seth.

The moment I get my food and settle down at a table for two, Piper walks into the dining room and searches quietly for me with her eyes. I wave my hands and she spots me. She gets her food immediately and joins me "you are not even halfway through your food yet, were you waiting for me? I'm so sorry I wasted a lot time" she rushes out

I wave it off "no problem I just got here, I was kind of distracted on my way here".

"By what" she questions

"A phone call from my cousin" I lie to her to avoid recalling the Seth incident that just happened In order to avoid telling his rehab secret; that's his story to tell.

As we eat and make small talks here and there, my phone buzzes shortly indicating I just received a text message.

I fish it out of my pockets and see a text message from an unknown number so I open it and read

I'll get you
