"Christmas warmth"

You had a feeling you’d be spending the holiday without him, but his last text had given you just an ounce of hope. Obviously, that hope was false.

He promised he’d be home, even though he’d have to leave again in two days for another overseas match. And he should’ve been there by now - you figured he just fell asleep in his hotel room instead of getting on his flight home, which to be honest sounded like a very miya thing to do in your eyes.

This is what you get for dating a player on the national volleyball team. Always busy, always working - never at home.

It was nights like these you were convinced that nothing mattered to Atsumu, Except volleyball, his whole life centers around a little round ball. Maybe you were silly to expect him to care about this stupid holiday as much as you did.

You couldn’t help but look over at his gifts that were under the tree, The tree you had to decorate alone lacking that festive mood. He wouldn’t be here to see it, or open the presents you spent too long wrapping and having no company around me.

As you lied on the couch, slowly falling asleep, you couldn’t help but feel like he didn’t care much about you, either. what broke every piece of your heart.

And you didn’t even wake up when the door opened.

....

Atsumu had a feeling you’d be waiting on the couch for him - you always were. And due to his flight being delayed, he didn’t get home until well after midnight - he wasn’t surprised to find you fast asleep. He felt terrible as he walked towards your sleeping form; you must’ve been so excited to see him today the bags under your eyes in contrast to the peace on your face.

He saw that you had stuffed countless presents underneath the lit up Christmas tree - the one that wasn’t there when he left three weeks ago - and he really hoped they weren’t all for him, because he knew he didn’t deserve them.

To be honest he felt like he didn't deserve you either, the bond you two had when you first met as Volleyaball player and club manager only escalated into a whirlwind romance he couldn't be more thankful for.

Usually, on nights like these, he wouldn’t wake you. You needed your sleep, the hectic life you lived as a relationships Councillor only made him sympathise, he had no right to wake you up in the middle of the night.

But tonight he found himself kneeling in front of you before he could tell himself not to.  "Y/N" he whispered as he held your shoulder. He refrained from shaking you - he remembered you once telling him you preferred being woken up gently. "Atsumu?" you mumbled without opening your eyes.

"You’re… home?" The shock in your voice hurting his heart more.

"Yeah, I'm home" he replied. He was so happy to be hearing your voice in person rather than over the phone.

"Come on, you need to get to bed". He spoke sweetly trying to lift you into his arms.

....

"Atsu…" You blinked your tired eyes open and had to rub away the sleep to be sure you weren’t still dreaming as you looked at the man in front of you.

And it wasn’t a dream. He was really there. Your arms were really wrapping around his shoulders, you weren’t imagining his eyes looking into yours. He was there. right in front of you.

You pulled him into the tightest possible hug, and hoped he didn’t see the tears in your eyes as he flipped you over so you was laying on top of him.

"I missed you," you told him honestly. "I didn’t think you’d make it…" the sadness in my voice laced with a tiny guilt. "I missed you, too," he replied. "I told you I’d be home, I never break promises with the people i love".

"I know," you said with a laugh. Maybe you were silly for assuming the worst. He had never gone back on his word, after all.
