The Remnants of Tomorrow: A Mandalorian Story

The Escape

I couldn't sleep that night. I was too scared to even close my eyes. I didn't want tomorrow to come. But as every hour passed I knew that I was coming closer to my fate. 

No. I can't do this. My father said that I was going to be a good ruler, the ruler the people needed but I looked myself in the mirror. The girl in front of me was no queen. A simple girl with dark curly waves and a round face with a button nose. People said I was beautiful.  But being a ruler was so much more than a pretty face. In that moment I realized what I needed to do, I needed to disappear. 

I grabbed a backpack and started packing a few things. clothes, some food, and my drawing pad. I knew I had to keep this a secret. no one could know that I left. I went to my secret passage and followed it to the garden. But I stopped myself. I needed credits. 

"Damn it," I said to myself. if you had money in this galaxy, you can get away with practically anything.  I needed to stop at the treasury. but how would that not be suspicious?  then I thought. 

General Ran. 

With the conversation the General had with my father I knew he didn't want me to be Queen either. I went to his office, hoping he would still be there. I knocked on the door.  My heart pounded in my chest. 

"General Ran?" 

I waited, I thought I was done for until but I heard someone behind the door. The General finally emerged. 

"Varina? what are you doing here so late at night?"

" I need your help." 

"help? with what? " 

I stopped, what if this was a mistake, what if he tells my father? but I thought about it. He thinks I'm not fit to wear the crown I so desperately hated. The reason my brother was no longer with us. The poison that had crept in my family. I was not going to let myself be a leader I knew I wasn't .

"You Don't want me to be Queen right?" 

General Ran looked horrified. 

"Varina, I never-" I cut him off 

"I don't want to be Queen either. So you are going to help me escape Orania. And I need credits, lots of them. " 

General Ran looked Dumbfounded. 

"Varina, if your father finds out that I helped you escape, it will be the end of me!"

I shook my head. 

"He's not going to find out. " 

"And how are you so sure?" 

"Because you're going to say that I disappeared without a trace. No one knows what happened. it will be like I never existed." 

"Varina, are you sure?" 

I laughed

"Marcus you never liked me and I'm sure your worst nightmare is to have me as your boss." 

"I never said I didn't like you, I just think you're not prepared to be Queen, but that is non of my business." 

"Well, you and I agree on that... so please, help me." 

I looked into the General's eyes pleading for my life. 

He sighed 

"Fine, go to the shuttle bay I will meet you there with the credits and your pilot."

"Pilot? no, just put me on a regular cruiser to a random system, the farther away the better." 

"No, at least let me send you with my best pilot." 

"Fine, as long as I get out of here." 

"Deal" 

The General left as I made my way to the shuttle bay. I was nervous. I couldn't believe I was doing this, but I didn't have a choice. I wanted to choose my own destiny. 

"Varina, this is C2S3 he will be your pilot to wherever you care to go. Once he is returned I will have his memory wiped so no one will know where you went. And here are as many credits as I could carry. I hope it will be enough." 

I looked gratefully at the General. 

"Thank you, Marcus," 

"Varina, are you sure you want to do this, you can tell your father you don't want to be Queen." 

" I already tried that, and he wouldn't listen. I need to go, it's the only way." 

The General sighed. he hands me a beacon. 

"If you change your mind, turn this on and I will find you." 

"Marcus I won't-" 

"Just take it" 

I took the beacon and put it in my bag

"May the force be with you Marcus." 

"And you as well Varina." 

And with that, I got on the plane with C2S3 not knowing what my future would hold.
