Lucas's POV

My alarm went off early. On a Saturday. I rolled my eyes and shut it off falling back asleep until I remember why. Maya. I jumped out of bed, got ready, and was out the door by eight thirty after talking to my mom and told her I'd be hanging out with my friends and I'd text her later.

I arrived at the coffee house early, and was uneasy to find how empty it was. It was normally kinda crowded but there were only a hand full of people present. The only one I cared about was sitting in her normal spot, slumped over, elbows resting on her knees slightly tensed but relaxed in all.
My heart twisted, remembering last night and the bruises I was able to see. I was at least a little relived to see she was in new clothes and looked normal on the outside...if you didn't know her. Her bruises were still dark and were slightly covered, which told me she didn't do heavy makeup today like she had been for months when she hated the stuff. I smiled slightly and sat next the her.

"Hey Ranger Rick." She smiled, turning to me.
"Hey Pancake. How ya feeling?" I asked.
"...better. I'm actually ok for once." She smiled.

How she could be ok, I had no idea. She did seem like she had a huge burden taken off her shoulders though.
"That's good." I smiled

Our eyes met and I remembered last night and the spark...we both looked away caught off guard but the sudden spark and tension was there.
"She's not coming, by the way. Just so you know."
"Who's not coming?" I asked
"Riley."
"What?! Has she even seen how hurt you are?"
"I'm fine Ranger Rick, and no...we...actually haven't talked in a while. She's barely around anymore... I don't know what's going on with her. She just...stopped showing up, she's never home and the bae windows been closed..." Maya ranted quickly trailing off her eyes dimming.
"Sorry...I know she hurt you and we're all mad at her but she's still my friend..." She muttered.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. Absolutely nothing." I assured her locking eyes with her.

Without realizing it, I was lightly brushing my hand over the huge bruise on her left temple. She winced slightly and I stopped locking eyes with her again. A pit of guilt and anger in my gut, but I looked at her differently. I don't know how but the feeling is just...amazing...

The rest of group walked through the door and I dropped my hand as we dropped eye contact.
"Hey guys." Maya greeted and they all responded.

There was an obvious anticipation throughout the group. We all wanted to know what happened to her. But we all grabbed something quick to eat and went to Hope park. Maya's park. We sat by the statue of friends and looked at Maya.

Her demeanor had changed. She was closed up, obviously upset and guarded.
"Take your time Maya." Smakel spoke suddenly.

Maya only nodded in response. She was twisting her and Riley's ring on her finger, biting her lip.
"Maybe if you guys ask questions it'll be easier..." She muttered.

We all looked at each other, unsure of what to say.
"Exactly how long has this been going?" Zay asked.
"About five and a half months."

The group tensed up again and there was silence for a long time.
"Why didn't you tell us Maya?" Farkle asked.
"Because I was scared and confused. Everyone has their own stuff going on and I don't know what's going on with Riley. I'm always putting you guys first which is fine but I'm not used to dealing with my own stuff. I didn't- I don't know how to handle this. I was ashamed and scared that if I told anyone they'd do something worse. Riley's and I relationship is already in jeopardy and if she finds out that I left Josh when that's the only reason she's talking to me anymore woul-"

"Josh?!?!" I cut her off in shock.

Her face fell and she went quiet.
"Maya you kept telling me everything was fine and you already knew I knew that something was wrong. Why wouldn't you just tell us or me the truth?" Zay asked.
"What? You want to hear me say that Josh- my long time crush who I used to be obsessed with, that Riley was so happy I finally started seeing him and I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world to be with him- fucked me blind and would purposely beat me and hurt me then acted like I was some stupid little girl after and there was no real relationship? You want to hear me say that I stayed because...I don't know why! All I knew was I was scared and confused. That I'm hurting? That's what you want to hear?!" Maya snapped, tears pouring down her face.

"Yes, Maya it is! I want to know that so I can help you! What would've happened if Josh hurt you so bad you died and no one knew anything?! We want to know this because we love you and your our friend let us help you! What if I lost you!?" Farkle exploded.

Maya's faced softened.
"Farkle, you could never lose me."
"We don't know that. You're my family Maya."

She stood and gave him a hug.
"You're ok though, right Maya?" Smakel asked.
"Yeah, Smakel, I'm ok."

I wasn't. I was raging. Barley controlling myself. Maya noticed.
"Lucas?"
"I'm just happy your safe." I answered plainly.

If I acknowledged my emotions, I'd be doing something I'd regret. So I stayed where I was.

One month later

"You didn't bring my books?!" Riley snapped at me as we walked into Mr. Matthews class.
"Why do I need to bring your books? Their your responsibility Riley!"
"You're my boyfriend Lucas! You do whatever I say, when I say it and don't question anything I say or do."
"No Riley. I don't. Maya, you left your essay in English." I said slipping her paper on her desk.
"Thanks Huckleberry." She smiled.

That dam smile that melted every fiber of my being and I don't know why but I couldn't help but smile back.
"Oh, what so you don't have my books but you have this sluty liars essay?!"

"Riley!" I shouted in complete shock

Maya started at her in hurt shock as no one knew what to say. Mr. Matthews wasn't here so there was no one to stop her.
"I don't know what's been going on with you and I don't care anymore, you can't treat people like this! Especially us! I'm so done! You are just too much for me Riley, I don't need this." I vented feeling the anger heat my face.
"What are you saying Lucas?" Riley asked rolling her eyes.
"I'm breaking up with you. For good this time."

Maya's POV

Riley and Lucas broke up two weeks ago and I didn't know what to do. The group was awkward, Riley was skipping all classes she has with any of us and I had been finding myself closer with Lucas than her now. I didn't know what was going on, I had soul searching and healing to do. I had to be there for my friends, keep doing good in school, and figure out what was going on with Riley.
